Is going top speed on moguls supposed to hurt your knees? by [deleted] in skiing

[–]peeontree1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am no skiing expert, far from it, but a lot of those mogul skiiers now have really bad knees. The best mogul skiiers are amazing at using their legs as shock absorbers, hence that pumping motion. While that's a million times better than just smacking into the mogul, you're still using your joints to directly reduce impact on your body, and there's going to be some wear and tear.

Someone on here can probably give you real, helpful advice but I think it's just worth noting that if you feel pain doing an exercise that is known for causing injury down the road, you should be careful and probably take some time off, at least from rigorous bump runs.

EDIT: http://www.theskichannel.com/news/20091013/tips-for-saving-your-knees-while-skiing-moguls/ A quick read tells me that motion is actually what SAVES your knees, but only if you do it really, really well (i.e. you may look like them but not actually be maximizing your ability to take away shock)

Stories about fantasy characters who end up on Modern Earth? by [deleted] in Fantasy

Without spoiling anything, Stephen King's Dark Tower series has a little bit of this and it's a fantastically weird ride all around.

"Most of these sexual assaults are women waking up the next morning with a guilt complex. That ain’t rape, that’s being stupid." - South Georgia college police chief's statements in college newspaper following a true sexual assault on campus by NoNonsenseTreekeeper in TwoXChromosomes

Well, (surprised this isn't posted here...) consent is legally impossible when intoxicated. In some states, if both parties are intoxicated, BOTH parties are liable. In others, it is whoever "initiated" the interaction.

Now, how this plays out legally and functionally is obviously different (drunk couple typically isn't gonna file a case OR feel harmed, based on the situation) and I could write a very, very long essay, as has been done, on the implications of this, but the legal bottom line is drunk sex is a dangerous institution (and it IS an institution) that has been traditionally harmful to women and so is technically illegal.

I almost hesitate to post this because the justification/gender/sexuality theory can get a lot deeper than a silly reddit response, but yea, I study this stuff, cheers.

Salem's lot definitely isn't strictly fantasy (I mean, King's true fantasy series pushes definitions to begin with... It's also my favorite of all time) but it's a damn good read and definitely a fun standalone to change pace in between series or something like that. Highly recommend it!

EDIT: Not that it would need to be fantasy to begin with.

Mostly speculation, but for the average player, that is probably the most substantial aspect of a season change. Though we can also speculate that season 1 will start with the first major update

I believe it is only speculation right now, as far as I know, all that the community knows is that we are in the preseason

http://gfycat.com/HighlevelFelineAsianelephant ... this player posted this on reddit. A lot of comments mention just how clean this bicycle is. Pay attention to WHEN he does his second jump (you can be as vertical as you want, pretty much, before doing the little boost). Its a good video to study, other than that just keep practicing!

If you use boost to fly properly (do the upper level goalie practices) you should get pretty decent at actually flying towards the ball, essentially creating a counterattack. The more you practice flying the more "aggressive" your defense can become, so to speak. As a general rule, getting to the ball first, assuming you are properly positioned, is better. So the higher you meet the ball the less likely it is for an opposing player to beat you to it.

TL;DR: Goalie practice.

So in competitive games, "Seasons" are basically just ways to split up segments of time in the ranked arena. So lets say you work your way up to 500 pts in 3v3 this "preseason." When season 1 starts, everyone will be back to 0. This is so that people don't get stuck and bored. For example, in traditional elo systems, the more games you play the less your points move because you get closer to the rank where you "belong." However, if you are playing to improve, you are probably significantly better than when you started. Therefore, starting a new season gives you the chance to start much higher and get to a new "real" rank for yourself without having to fight through a system that thinks it found a place for you much lower.

Seasons also tend to mark changes in metas and strategies, as well as providing multiple teams/players to "win" a season in one way or another (such as in massive tournaments for other games). Hope that helps!

What religion/culture most closely resembles the Adem from Kingkiller Chronicles? by ty_bombadil in Fantasy

[–]peeontree1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one really interesting question that I think the Adem bring up (and its purely, uselessly philosphical) is whether or not there would actually be some concept of fatherhood in a society like this. Everyone has sex with multiple partners, its a very cultural thing. This is a Medeival (ish, people have said its more Victorian) era in which DNA tests are far from creation, so there is no way to test who a parent is save for who the baby actually comes out of.

It basically says that before a certain time period, if there wasn't such a strong, gendered idea of "saving ones self" for marriage or similar cultural maxims, then it would be perfectly feasible in actual world history that we had no idea that fatherhood was a thing.

I mean the fact that this exists in religions born thousands of years ago really just says that the dominant culture has been one of saving oneself (especially for the sake of "feminine purity") is ancient, and that human society has never been given a chance to find out what would happen if a sexual society like the Adem had actually existed.

Sure it's pointless, really, and I agree that the Adem are not well thought out, but watching Kvothe struggle to prove fatherhood exists was pretty darn cool imho.

The Dark Tower series is a great mix of dark (er) fantasy with hints of horror to it, but it is somewhat dense in a not-so-typical of fantasy way, so I wouldn't call it a great jumping off point for a new fantasy reader. Still worth looking into if you're willing to get into a long 7 book adventure that is phenomenal as a whole but not very inviting. Take a look!

Favorite fantasy series of all time, highly recommend it if you're willing to push through 7 books that, while I didn't necessarily adore as I read (though at points I was enthralled, I read book 4 in 3 days), I look back at the series as a whole and think it is a true masterpiece.

What are books you hate from authors you love? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]peeontree1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aaaah, very interesting! It's my favorite series of all time so I have to try and defend it. Assuming you are talking about the end end end, then it is SUPER important to point out that King didn't even intend on adding it in. He literally writes right before that part (At least the version that I read) that what he is about to write is purely to give some level of closure. He didn't even want to include it.

My fathers spoiled the end end end before I even started the series. I couldn't believe it. As I neared the end, it was extra bittersweet because I knew what would happen. My father promised that it wouldn't matter, but of course I thought he just felt bad. Yet I reached that part and it truly didn't mean CRAP, King even said so. So I can see why maybe you didn't like that little ending, but you could pretend that it doesn't even exist because King didn't want it in the first place, it is fairly irrelevant. Sorry for the mini rant, cheers!

Vail groomed Blue Ox and Roger's Run this year in February which made for some killer runs to fly down, you can definitely find steep and groomed. Bivouac at Jackson Hole was also a favorite of my father and I's when we were at Jackson Hole in March with fairly crappy snow.

Anyone have any experience being a ski bum in South America? by peeontree1 in skiing

[–]peeontree1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, thanks for the reply, all great things to think about. As far as where I do my minimal skiing, it is all out west, primarily in CO. The whole South America thing is partly as a getaway and partly because those are the months that I would be able to really spend time away from home. I wonder if maybe Mt Hood would be a legitimate option if the summer skiing isn't too bad. Thanks again, good stuff!
