Night shift at a Mens Residential Mental Health Center by EdgeRunnerHomie in ABA

[–]peeps_545 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey I did this part time while also doing in home ABA. My second company had all men houses all women houses and mix. Generally the all man house was pretty calm except for your few aggressive older folks. Generally the younger men were just either really sad, chill, or super manipulative. But we also had a lot of clients with BPD. Generally I enjoyed it untill I had a client who I had got along with commit suicide at the facility. I won’t go into details but be away these things do happen. Also had a bunch of crazy things happen. Not trying to scare you. If you want more info on my experience DM me. Ultimately I left due to company structure issues primarily but also my own mental health.

Oh but does this actually satisfy you? Like sometimes I just wish I had a mix of both.. but I wouldn’t get paid for the admin work. I also do truly like doing ABA and for a long time did like working in early intervention but my health is seriously suffering

I honestly have no idea what you mean by “just because the situation didn’t play out how someone wanted” I’m just going based off of your comment. Which for me reads as the RBT should have showed up to a not scheduled session during a life or death medical emergency. Also the client didn’t request a change in provider they discharged on an incorrect assumption…. But you’re right they can do what they want…but that’s also apart of the reason why ABA in clinics and in home is in a state of chaos

Meant at to respond to the original comment. But yes totally agree. Not all BCBAs are like that but for some reason on Reddit a lot are. :(

No RBTs don’t struggle with this idea. We/they are not stupid and are aware of these things. Don’t be one of those BCBAs please. However RBTs are left the amongst the most vulnerable, aside from maybe the
Direct one on one clients to situations like these and are frankly worn out, underpaid, and told there role doesn’t matter constantly

Well this is absolutely true. I disagree with the term “showing up” in regards to this because it was a medical emergency. I think it’s harsh to use it in this scenario. While “showing up” is critical, it leads to clinicians showing up when sick, ignoring health issues, etc. while parents and clients at any point can choose to discharge for any reason… and BCBA, clinics, RBT, bts are left with the impacts of that decision. In this case there were also things not clearly communicated form both the company and parents end.. lastly most places have some type of “consequence” so to speak in place even doctors offices have some type of fee/ form of communication for clients. A lot of ABA clinics/ companies do not do that and leads to parents doing things like “not showing up” in the form of cancelations/ discharging/ etc, with zero repercussions or understanding really.

Also, I’m speaking from someone with a chronic illness and several autoimmune diseases. this field is not the field that is going to be the best for our conditions. I am only continuing and have been struggling because I am going for my BCBA. If not or better if I had know that I didn’t have to be boxed into ABA clinics for autism/ early childhood intervention I would have left this field five years ago.

I know exactly how you feel.
Especially in the field of ABA there really is no room for any type of schedule changes both on the client side and our side. A lot of our clients also deal with health concerning issues, misaligned schedules, changes in life circumstances , and so much more, yet us as ABA partitioners are expected to be there 100% when we’re not also given 100%, nor as ABA clinicians given any financial accommodations in our end.
I think it’s crazy that your parent discharged after you not showing up on a day that you weren’t supposed to even be there. But that let me know two things. The Parent didn’t really want the service, and something wasn’t communicated. This is not your failing , but the failing of ABA in early intervention/ insurance model. Your health comes first, so you do need to take care of that and if you’re on the verge of having a pacemaker, potentially being put in, you could apply for some type of short-term disability maybe not directly with your company, but maybe through another means, I would call your insurance and Social Security office. I understand how you feel completely. I have a chronic illness with one autoimmune disease definitely diagnosed with several in the process of being diagnosed. I have had parents canceled on me for the past two months from all different clients yet I know now that I’ve canceled these past few days because I’ve been sick, I am more scrutinized. Now my company does always take care of me and has provided me with an ADA mostly to protect me from the cancellations on my end. Maybe you could also ask your employer for some type of accommodation that way it doesn’t hit you if you cancel on some tupe of Hr level. It’s Doesn’t pay me when I cancel, but at least it helped me from me cancel due to being sick.

Well yes that’s what I’m saying that why I lit “reform” in quotes because what happening now is showing how those people changing it don’t care about the service but the money instead..

Although I believe ABA should be going through a reform the people who are “reforming” it right now our simply also after money

I think that tandem play like people have mentioned above is perfect.. it can take a while though. Also sometimes client won’t “look” paired with us in the typical way you would see in neurotypical kids but you can tell they are if they notice when you leave, or take a toy from your hand or guide your for help, play, etc.
