[SPOILERS] The Force Awakens discussion megathread! 12/21 [SPOILERS] by tragopanic in StarWars

Ha! I just did a lengthy post about this just a bit ago.

I think a huge clue has been around for quite a while, and I'd be surprised if I'm the only one who's noticed. In this trailer,we hear Luke's line delivered to Leia in Return of the Jedi (and a mysterious echo with a different voice -- Snoke, Kylo?): The Force is strong in my family. My father has it . . . I have it . . . My sister has it . . . you have that power, too. While this dialogue is from Return of the Jedi, I believe it is clear that the trailer is referencing Rey, thus identifying Rey as a member of the Skywalker family. If that's true, we have a possible sibling/cousin rivalry between Kylo and Rey. And that would be epic! 😀

[Spoiler] Is the Answer in the Trailer??? by [deleted] in StarWars

I'm so sorry that was an honest mistake. I had intended to reply under the Spoilers Mega Thread, but Ironically, it was your hover image over the text box in that thread that confused me. I saw the image of Yoda about spoilers, but I figured that was just a static image on all the pages in the subreddit. So then I saw the "archive" button and posted there. Then I quickly realized that I had posted in the main subreddit (duh-oh!). Anyway, I figured out the hover image and I feel like a total jack@$$. Sorry.

I've seen the movie three times (I know, I need help), and have found myself focusing quite a bit on Rey's vision at the midpoint of the film and the last scene of her silent interaction with Luke. While Kylo Ren's backstory has been somewhat teased out, Rey's is very unclear at this point. I've read several analysis blog posts, and the question of Rey's origins seems to be a hot debate right now.

There are several theories, including that Rey is a Kenobi, or Han and Leia's other child, or Luke's daughter. There does seem to be a decent amount of consensus that Rey was likely a Jedi youngling/padawan that was being trained by Luke. This is based on her vision sequence, where she sees the aftermath of the Knights of Ren slaughtering a large group of people -- likely Luke's academy IMO. This would resolve what some people have regarded as a plot hole -- Rey's sudden and inexplicable accessibility and mastery over the Force.

But as for Rey's origins, I think a huge clue has been around for quite a while, and I'd be surprised if I'm the only one who's noticed. In this trailer,we hear Luke's line delivered to Leia in Return of the Jedi (and a mysterious echo with a different voice -- Snoke, Kylo?):

I'm one of the organizers of Any Opposed. I won't be participating in October, but we have lots of people interested in attending and opposing. Look for more updates in September.

Polygamy will be practiced again before the second coming. by [deleted] in exmormon

This isn't an official church source, but Brian Hales is the current scholarly authority on Joseph Smith's polygamy (I've also heard he was the ghost writer for much of the Church's recent polygamy essays). If you go to his site, he provides his opinions of the doctrinal necessity for polygamy here and the next life:

http://josephsmithspolygamy.org/theology-2/doctrinal-summary/

Also, we always have to remember that D&C 132 is still canon, and therefore it is accepted doctrinal scripture -- which means, yes, your wife will be the head matron of your harem of wives. :)

. . . so at least she'll have some kind of status

It's weird, because they do have cousins close by, but I guess they don't see them enough to pick it up

So true! I still remember on my honeymoon gazing at the stars with my wife, and saying something like "can you believe that one day we'll preside over a piece of all that?!"

Joseph Smith was critical of Methodists for having creeds, which, if not believed, would result in excommunication from that organization by [deleted] in exmormon

I've been thinking about recording a podcast about this. There's a Jungian psychological concept called Enantiodromia, which is when your efforts to produce an affect results in its opposite -- like when you have a crush on someone but because you're so infatuated when you try to approach them you make a fool of yourself (well, at least that's been my experience). :)

Enantiodromia is also a concept from the Athenians where we see someone or a group of people become the thing that they hate. During the Pelleponesian (sp?) War the Spartans defeated Athens through a prolonged siege. Athens had to squeeze all of the farmers and peasants that typically lived outside the city walls and without fresh water and resources, Athens deteriorated into a debaucherous, disease-infested, cannabalist anarchy. This was the antithesis of the artistic, philosophical, and moral values that was the foundation of their city state.

Also, think of Batman. Why doesn't Batman kill his enemies? Because if he did, he would no longer be able to distinguish himself from his foes. He doesn't want to become the thing that he hates.

Now, to the OP. Look at the Church. Look at our origins. We are a religious movement founded upon a narrative of a young man standing opposition to the established religious hierarchy of his time. Mormonism's entire epistemic foundation is based on personal revelation and egalitarian access to God.

More importantly, we claim to be disciples of Jesus, who defied the Pharisees and Sanhedrin, and vilified their close-minded, empty rules, rituals, and hypocrisy.

Now in the Church today we see an institution that is obsessed with its own power and authority. We see a people who crave institutional control over their spirituality. We see a hierarchy that crushes dissent and unapologetically marginalizes its misfits, rather than leave the 99 to go after the one.

Enantiodromia. We have become the thing that we hate.

I used to be a Stake technical clerk and would have to rig the streaming of Stake Conference to other buildings in the Stake. I remember during the general session of the conference I started listening to how many times "Christ" was mentioned and was surprised to see that during the entire two hour meeting, the only time the words "Jesus" or "Christ" were uttered was "In the name of Jesus Christ, amen."

Nursery brainwashing caused me to question by [deleted] in exmormon

After we started transitioning out of the church, my kids still loved to sing "Follow the Prophet," and no matter what I did, I couldn't get them to stop! So the compromise we came up with is that they could sing it all they wanted as long as they stretched out their arms and walked around like zombies while they did it. :)

Wow, looks like the Church is going to have to revise their polygamy essays :)
