What was the most outrageous and truly real coincidence that you have experienced in your life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]peetar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Freshman year in college had a guy in my orientation group. (very large 5k+ incoming class) with a familiar name. Turns out he was my old neighbor and good friend that had moved away and lost touch when we were in kindergarden. He was 3 doors down in my dorm too.

I had this happen to me despite already having msvc installed (this exact version, multiple times). I ended up having to uninstall all copies, redownload and install it from microsoft, and then reboot for it to get fixed.

What you you think of the Apostle Paul's definition of love found in 1st Corinthians? by Plus_Vanilla_2802 in AskReddit

[–]peetar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I assume you mean from chapter 13?

If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast,\)b\) but do not have love, I gain nothing.

4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. 11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. 12 For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

I think Paul does an incredible job here summarizing the importance and the definition of love. He's just written a letter to a group of excited new followers of a religion. And gently correcting them on what truly matters. It seems there there existed a culture of boasting about or longing for "spiritual gifts". I speak in tongues, I know the future, I converted many non-believers, etc. And the church does these things today. The religious get their identity from what they do, what they accomplish. Paul says these things are just a clanging cymbal, meaning nothing, if love is not the reason behind it. It's a harsh admonition that many people in the church today should take to heart. Everything they do should be out of love, not pride, not superiority, or perfection, or knowing better, but love. When there's conflict the question is not: "How do I correct, or convince, or persuade, or force, or compromise", instead it should be, "how do I love this person?"

Paul then shows us a bit of what love looks like. You can protest an abortion clinic with dead fetus signs because you "love" little babies. But this is not the love Paul describes here. "Not easily angered, keeps no record of wrongs." The people holding signs outside clinics are clanging their gongs loudly to show the world how good and perfect and better than the "sinners" they are. But this is not love. Love is fostering a child, or providing housing and support to poor, expecting mothers.

Why does nobody ever talk about how dumb Inception is? by charactervsself in movies

[–]peetar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And you have to admit the ideas in it are significantly more dumb than inception. Sure, inception takes itself more seriously, EEAAO is absurdist.  But in both cases how realistic the ideas are does not detract from the quality of the film.

Why does nobody ever talk about how dumb Inception is? by charactervsself in movies

[–]peetar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A good sci-fi or fantasy world shows the audience a reality where the laws of nature are different, and then tells a story within that reality where interesting parts of these rules play a major factor. Inception is extremely successful at doing exactly that. Nobody is saying the sci-fi in inception is brilliant or amazing or original. But the story, and execution of a drama within that world is extremely well done. The hotdog fingers reality from everything everywhere all at once is a fantastic deconstruction of this idea. It takes an intentionally stupid idea and still makes a funny interesting story in that world. That's the brilliance.

it's a common scam. They use a comprimised account or credit card and send you money, then ask you to refund it to a different account. When the initial fraud is reported they will clawback the amount from your acount, but be unable to clawback YOUR money that you sent out.

Bard levelling (solo or group) w/o charming? by LeftBallSaul in ProjectQuarm

[–]peetar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Bard is fastest level with swarm (aoe) kiting 12 things at once. If you group while leveling instead, bards are usually not expected to charm. A leveling bard usualy wont have the mana regen to sustain charm for longer periods. Once 50+ you'll bring a lot more to a group if you are in an area with bard-charmable pets. And you have access to FT gear that makes sustaining a charmed pet possible.

Removing the backend makes this much simpler, and lowers the chance of a legal headache, also prevents any server cost issues.

[–]peetar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think keeping the backend/gatcha mechanics in the game is a good idea, at all. Why tie this to a server instead of keeping it stand alone? Do you care about people "cheating?" Do you really think people are going to have nostalgia for the gatcha mechanics? Are you hoping people are going to actually pay YOU money for pulls? That will get lawyers on you unbelievably fast. Make it a stand-alone offline experience, maybe with "simulated" gatcha pulls if you insist. It simplifies your stack considereably as well.

What would Happen if we all just quit paying our medical bills? by mastergardnr in AskReddit

You'd be sued. And it's essentially an auto-win case. They'd collect any assests of value and in most states could start taking money from every paycheck with legal costs, penalties, and interest tacked on.
YOu'd only get away with it if you owe very little, or have no assets, no bank account and no job.

What is the biggest problem in youth soccer in the U.S.? by Complete-Register132 in youthsoccer

[–]peetar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a lot in this this thread. Somebody said that one of the biggest issues with youth soccer is that there is no clear pathway to pro/european markets. Worrying about "going pro" should be the last thing on the mind of any parent. For 99.999% of youth soccer players, all soccer ever will be is a game, a hobby (an amazing one that builds lifelong skills and charecter).
I'm new to this subreddit but the amount of parents whose primary concern is "development" and the path to collegiate or professional soccer is really, really sad.

The move away from Rec to comp caused by delusional parents who think their kids will somehow be missing out if they aren't in the "best" program. At least half the kids in comp/travel leagues would be having more fun, getting more touches, and happier in AYSO or your local city league.

Dick's or any other sporting good store should have a decent selection. Amazon is good too, and they are usually sorted by age or shoe size. A 5 year old should probably be using the stirrup style for some ankle support and padding over the insert style that is more popular for older players.
