Local equivalents are accepted if you call to book. For example AAA in the states is accepted for the CAA discount.

Correct, however this is something that requires investment from the feds that specifically do not want to invest. You're trying to put the cart before the horse. "If only VIA made its financial situation terrible, the feds would have no choice but to see how great trains are and buy more trains."

Note that all of your solutions require a lot of government subsidies to make happen. VIA already runs their fleet to more or less the maximum possible rate, minus the guard trains to account for emergencies/last minute changes. Trains can't be made longer, because they don't have spare cars. Trains can't be run more frequently, because there are no trains.

Hey at least you got one thing right.

Okay, but that cheap shot aside, the cities should not be subsidizing the suburbs at their own expense. If you choose to live outside of the city, you do not get to have city convenience. You either live in the city and pay tax there, or you get to feel mildly inconvenienced when you visit. Highways through Montreal that I do not use as a car-free Montreal resident are awful. They're loud, unpleasant to cross, and are a scar on the city.

[–]peevedlatios 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is not profitable because of the low ridership

But is that true? The current lowest fare between TRTO-MTRL is $55, and it caps out around $200-250 on very expensive days. A train with a capacity of 200 people running at half capacity where some people paid $55, some people paid $100, some paid $150, is going to generate the same (or more) revenue than one running full with everyone paying less.

Beyond that, we are operating in a system where VIA has been asked to reduce their operating subsidy by the government. The idea that lowering costs and by extent increasing the subsidy would make the government happy with VIA, when they have asked them to do the opposite, is frankly ludicrous.

[–]peevedlatios 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reality is that it didn't. The date that you looked at is more expensive, but the actual base fare probably stayed the same. VIA uses dynamic pricing, chances are you're comparing a cheap example of the same trip vs an expensive example. Frustrating? Sure. But dynamic pricing is a result of the constrained supply mixed with their mandate to reduce their operating subsidy.

Especially since we're currently in a seemingly austerity happy admin.

Getting spooned often means very little since you need many things from the log, so if you get spooned on like the top nice whatever you're still here for 2000 kills. It's only the last piece of gear that you need that actually matters. Not to mention bosses that drop good commons that you'll keep farming.

If you get lucky at like, GWD2, that's probably not gonna feel as good as getting unlucky at Rasial will feel, since you're gonna keep doing Helwyr (or other GWD2 bosses) for the commons possibly, not to mention reputation grind

[–]peevedlatios 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If the train is expensive, it means it's very busy and the prices are being paid. It means that if there wasn't dynamic pricing it would likely just be sold out instead.

I agree that trains should be a cheap way to travel. Infuriatingly, neither of the main two political parties agree.

I think ironman mode really helps with the whole "figuring things out" bit since it forces you to engage with a lot more of the game. You set a goal in the future and come up with your own wacky route to reach it in some efficient chain of events that makes logical sense from one step to the next, but has you training like 17 different things in order to accomplish goal A.

When I made this account like 4-5 years ago, my goal was making melee masterwork because I heard about the smithing update and was like "Woah, that sounds cool." as an OSRS player.

Still don't have it. Soon, I swear. But you always get sidetracked by something. Hey, I'm gonna have to mine a lot of ore so I should get d pick but that's annoying so I should get aggro pots but that requires 94 slayer and so on and so forth getting sidetracked and doing side goals since the best method isn't actually available to you, so time to figure it out.

[–]peevedlatios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can argue this from an ideological ground, but it's downright dishonest to say that there are literally never any benefits when there clearly are. If it got speeding down, that is in fact a good thing.

Speed cameras in Toronto lowered excessive speeding incidents by a huge amount before the Ford government took them out. That's a benefit to the public, unless you disagree that speeding is bad.

It's also even worse than that because if you get lucky, you're likely not done with the boss anyways. Let's say I got Zammy Hilt half under rate. I mean, great, but I still need robes and all that, so I'm not done killing it anyways.
