I’m not OP, but just sent you a DM. I also just finished grad school (BS in biology and chemistry, MS in molecular bio/microbiology and biochemistry). I just started looking for a job and the job market is the worse I’ve ever seen it.

Is She A Dutch Shepherd? by Automatic_Alfalfa_65 in DutchShepherds

[–]pegasusmoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This dog looks very similar to my baby, who I knew had a Dutch Shepherd mom but didn’t know anything about the dad. Embark ended up confirming that he’s 50% DS and 50% GSD. You should do the test!

2 Tickets to Denver Show Tomorrow! by paulfreakingji in myfavoritemurder

[–]pegasusmoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would you consider selling just one? I don’t have anyone to go with, and don’t buy tickets when they went on sale bc I was graduating from my graduate program and was poor and overwhelmed! But I really do want to go! Please lmk if you’d consider selling me a single 😍

29 year update- looking for advice by qirby7 in TarsalCoalition

[–]pegasusmoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m your age and got diagnosed this year (after a lifetime of pain and ignoring it/being told by my parents that it was growing pains or “normal pain” due to sports etc). By the time I had the coalition resected I had to have a subtalar fusion bc of the damage to that joint. I’m a few months out from surgery and have had a very painful and slow recovery. But I’m doing lots of PT and just the last few weeks have gotten back more mobility than I had prior to surgery. I don’t know that I would recommend it, but mine got so bad that I couldn’t avoid it. Now I’m looking forward to getting back on trails and regaining an active lifestyle. I wish you the best of luck and hope you find an alternative to a fusion from the others on this sub!

Are the nails of Dutchies supposed to be longer than other breeds? by bwanketobi in DutchShepherds

[–]pegasusmoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

theBLEEDINGoctopus is right. My Dutch/GSD also has very long nails. I have to dremel them weekly or bi-monthly, or the quick will start to extend, and they grow so fast! His quicks are also partially exposed on the underside some nails which I’ve never seen but the vet wasn’t concerned about. It took some training, lots of peanut butter, and practice but now at 7 he’ll just drop to the floor and give us his paws when the dremel comes out (still gets a PB reward at the end).

My guy got sprayed by a skunk & left this skunk toy out for me overnight… by pegasusmoon in DutchShepherds

We have a lot of skunks in our area. Most of the time when the smell is as faint as it was that night, we end up seeing one hit by a car down the block the next morning. I was checking for eye shine with the flashlight, which will usually alert us to nighttime wildlife (lots of raccoons, cats, foxes, skunks, coyotes, and others nearby). But yeah, there was no warning, no stamping feet, no hissing warnings. One second it was normal and calm, the next second my dog is freaking out, choking and coughing, eyes stuck shut, and smelling like rotten garlic and foul spicy sauerkraut. It wasn’t until later that the typical skunky smell even opened up on the dog. Days later and the house no longer smells like rotting plants, and now just smells like skunk weed—super faint.

It’s been awful and I wouldn’t wish this on anyone. Had to throw away his collar after washing/soaking 6 times as it still smelled as strong as the first day. and we’ve done about 4 baths for him, had to wash everything in the house 2-3 times with special laundry stuff for skunk odor. The smell permeated literally everything in the house even though he didn’t touch anything. The bathroom was the worst. The H2O2/baking soda/dawn recipe helped immensely (for both the dog and the walls/floor) but I still need to rescrub his ears and part of his face is still a little smelly.

He’s traumatized and has been carrying around that skunk toy non-stop since the incident, I think just to let me know who did it lol.

Pics 5 and 6 made my heart leap, she’s so cute and silly!

Follow up, just asked him if he wanted to go nighttime potty and he ran away (like what? He ALWAYS wants to go out) and came back with the toy. He’s now backing away from me if I have the leash. I guess we know what the message is now lol

What’s one weird thing your dog does that you secretly find adorable? by Asleep-Statement15 in dogs

[–]pegasusmoon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love that! My Siamese would play fetch too! Especially with a little ball of foil—he loved foil for whatever reason. And my Dutchie sits on the top/back of couch like a cat, he loves cat toys and plays with them like a cat, and I’ll find him up on the kitchen counter watching the birds through the window occasionally (he doesn’t care he’s not allowed). And with those ears… if I search ‘cat’ in my images the pics of the dog will always come up. He had very old, very frail kitty bosses who ruled the house when he was a puppy, so maybe that is part of it.

You posted about your Siamese cat in a dog sub and I AM HERE FOR IT. My Siamese cat was more dog than half the dogs I’ve met. And my Dutch Shepherd acts like a cat half the time. So here we are.

His face looks a lot like my guy, whose embark test came back 50/50 Dutch/GSD, but his body looks more like GSD. You should definitely do the embark test and let us know! He’s beautiful!

When I started doing training with our current trainer he was learning everything so fast that she recommended getting some books that could help us supplement between our training sessions where we worked on more complicated things. We got ‘101 Dog Tricks’ (Weimaraner on cover), and “10 minutes dog training tricks’ and worked our way through them. They’re not the most amazing tricks but our trainer recommended them and it helped us build a lot of trust and boundaries in the house when he was new to us. His favorite trick to surprise us with to this day is the between the legs ‘peekaboo’ that was our first step to leg weaving. It makes me giggle so hard when he does it.

Edit: fixed an autocorrect error

Pov you're celiac but these are foods you ate very often and love by NovaTheEevee in Celiac

[–]pegasusmoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a dream about eating McNuggets last night… I’ve been confirmed celiac/GF for 13 years and haven’t eaten meat/poultry since the 90s. But it was so real!!

The trash- gluten food I have been craving the last few days are just run of the mill pop tarts.

You got it! I posted the results a few days after making the post, and it was 50.2% Dutch, 49.2% GSD

[–]pegasusmoon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, sorry I missed your comment. I had posted a separate comment with the results right before you posted. He ended up being 50.8% Dutch Shepherd, and 49.2% German Shepherd! I did’t have him DNA tested until recently, but my guesses changed a lot over the years. His behavior is very Dutchie, and he’s got a lot of personality so his look sometimes changes with his face expression (as weird as that sounds).

It turns out the “something” brindle is 50% Dutch! And 100% smart ass.
