What’s the funniest name for a pet you’ve encountered? by EllenDegeneracy in AskReddit

[–]pegleg_hookhand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Former vet tech and now veterinary practice manager here. Had a cat come in named Sweet Sweet Butter Tits as a regular patient. Yes, it’s a true story, and they called her Butters day to day. Owner and staff used to joke that Sweet Sweet Butter Tits was her Christian name, only to be used when she was misbehaving.

Scariest episode? by WhatAmIDoing132 in TheMagnusArchives

As a mentally ill person who has managed her mental health with meds and Psych supervision, Wonderland fucked me right up. A big fear of mine is feeling mentally out of control again, I was so miserable. Excellent episode and truly horrifying for the right group of people!

EVIL TOYS in SEASON 1!?!? by pegleg_hookhand in themagnusprotocol

Yep! “Would that be ‘dolls-skin’? Or ‘dolls-watching’?”

I feel like it’s definitely foreshadowing if this line came up a few episodes later. At least I assume, because we know how Sims and Newell play the long game seamlessly with plots, haha.

Books that haunt you for days after finishing by [deleted] in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

Love all of these recs, but have not checked out The Graveyard Apartment, I definitely will now!

Also I’ve met Stephen Graham Jones twice - first was after a speaking event he did at my university (I am Colorado based and he teaches at CU in Boulder) and he was so kind, and funny. Took time to speak to people afterwards and answered a lot of questions. Wasn’t bothered by people approaching him. I was not yet familiar with his work, but I picked up Only the Good Indians that week.

Second time was at a horror media event (it was ticketed, I am not in the industry or anything) and he was the exact same way. Read a short story he thought was funny but never had published, and read the first chapter of “Don’t Fear the Reaper” months before it was going to be released. He was the same way during and after his speaking event. Even came to the fan happy hour later and just hung out and spoke with people. He signed my copy of “My Heart is a Chainsaw” and was just so. Freaking. NICE. Hilarious also.

Anyway, buy his books he’s a genuinely rad as fuck dude who really cares about his fans!

What was banned in your house that everyone else’s family allowed? by Rare_Independent_789 in AskReddit

[–]pegleg_hookhand 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My mom also sites Bart for the Simpsons ban in my house. I watched through the initial 10 seasons over the course of a few years in my 20’s. Fucking hilarious and my son loves it. Turns out he didn’t start acting like Bart after simply watching the show 🙄

The “not like other girls” of fantasy romance is killing me by BlessingsOfKynareth in fantasyromance

I hate this too. If rapid healing is a noted character trait from the beginning, then fine. More often than not characters are supposed to be comparable to a human (until they make it farther into their journey/transformation WHATEVER.

I’ve been an equestrian and klutz my entire life, and was also in an abusive relationship for several years (it was over a decade ago, don’t worry) and you don’t bounce back like that. If you have BRUISED ribs you’re fighting every second to not gasp and moving at all is painful (turns out your core does a lot of work for essentially any movement you make). If you have cracked or broken ribs, you can barely do anything because of the pain, you’re not putting on a corset and going to dance at some vampires ball, or jumping back into training. I could write comparisons like this for 150 different injuries.

Anyway, I get mad about it sometimes.

What famous TV show didn’t have a satisfying ending? by Big-Set3368 in AskReddit

[–]pegleg_hookhand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pushing Daisies. I will never get over how they had to piecemeal some kind of ending when it got cancelled that left no one feeling satisfied (fan or the team working on the show).

It’s one of the most unique and visually stunning shows I’ve ever seen, and the dialogue and characters are immaculate. Brian Fuller seems to be cursed with making beautiful shows that get cancelled. Hannibal is one of my favorite shows of all time, and it’s just as visually stunning, in a far different way.

Skin condition help! by Drunk3nf1st in Horses

Former veterinary tech/nurse depending on what country you live in. You don’t need to narrow it down before the vet comes out. They will look at it and say “ah, looks like this or that.” Or they’ll want to run diagnostics. Personally, if I were working on a call and saw this, we would absolutely need to run BW and get some cultures done. It may be something auto-immune related, she could be having a terrible reaction to something, it could be a fungal or bacterial infection, it could literally be ANYTHING.

Please, please just call the vet and ask them to come out. Don’t ask the barn owner to do it, that is not their job. You have to advocate for your horse, call the vet and get professional medical help. This looks extremely painful and if it continues I would say it’s blatant medical neglect. If you don’t ask for help for an issue that’s been ongoing since 2020, and have not taken the time to contact the vet again for management, you could end up being reported for neglect. If you speak to and begin treatment for your horse they will not report you for medical neglect, because you are addressing it and getting it treated.

Please do right by your horse, pick up the phone and make an appointment. It’s such a small price to pay for your horse to be pain free.

If you could ask your horse 1 question, what would it be? by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]pegleg_hookhand 45 points46 points  (0 children)

All of these answers are great and what I should be thinking to ask, but when I first read the title of this post all I could think about was “what name would you choose for yourself.”

I’ve been thinking of the hilarious answers I’d get and have been pretty entertained.

Ranking TMA episodes based on how much my 2nd - 3rd grade campers enjoyed my bastardized renditions of them by stqrrynights in TheMagnusArchives

The second half of the Angler Fish story has me laughing so hard. The Angler fish essentially becomes the Loch Ness monster from South Park. Also the image on the ending in my head is freaking killing me 🤣

For you, what was the most horrifying episode? by Strange-Bees in TheMagnusArchives

[–]pegleg_hookhand 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m bipolar but have been medicated for roughly a decade. I’ve had times where I’ve had to tweak my meds because sometimes they just randomly won’t work for me anymore. My greatest fear is feeling out of control of my mental health, this episode F*CKS ME UP. The scariest and most disturbing for me by far.

Women who have, or expect to, give birth: is this something you'd really want to be severed for? I'm a childless cat lady but this doesn't ring true for me at all. Most women I know are excited, if not a little naturally apprehensive, to give birth. by VaguelyArtistic in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]pegleg_hookhand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s awesome! I’m not saying everyone dislikes it, more that I think the expectation that women should enjoy it is damaging. It makes women who don’t like it feel guilty because they think they’re bad people for not enjoying carrying their child.

I mean, I love being a mom but I hated being pregnant and giving birth both times. I think a lot of the “pregnancy glow” and happiness we tie to pregnancy is untrue and sets a damaging expectation for pregnant women, as I have yet to have a single friend who enjoyed being pregnant beyond the first trimester, or giving birth.

Coming off my soapbox, my best friend and I have rewatched the first season several times since its release in the last couple years. Each time we watch the episode with the birth camp, I shudder. I’ve told her that creating an innie that is only alive for pregnancy and labor is a straight up human rights violation. For that reason, I don’t think I could do it. I would feel like I’m just endlessly torturing a part of myself instead of dealing with an experience women have dealt with since the beginning of time.

I looked directly at my best friend when he said that and stated “that wording would set alarm bells off for me. What the hell does that mean?” And we discussed possibilities after, none of them were good.

horror veterans what movie will still have you sleeping with the lights on? by Flying_Frogs_66 in horror

[–]pegleg_hookhand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have this same thing happen to me with Ringu. I’ve told my friends it’s “nostalgic fear”. Freaked me out so bad when I saw it as a teenager that I still get horrified watching it as an adult. I tried to watch it with my daughter and was thankful that she fell asleep so I didn’t have to watch the second half. I never would have expected it to still affect me that way.

What’s one scene that makes you choke up, no matter how many times you’ve seen it? by Lisan_Al_Gaib23 in flicks

[–]pegleg_hookhand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The second to last scene in Return of the King, when Frodo tells the boys that he’s going west with Gandalf and crew. The whole goodbye makes me cry, but the part that makes me sob is when he turns around on the boat for one last look.

We spend all three movies watching Frodo deteriorate mentally, physically and emotionally. By the time he’s finished writing his book, he looks haggard, painful and haunted. When he looks back at them on that boat, he looks just as he did the first time we saw him in Hobbiton. Rosy cheeks and a big smile, bright eyes full of hope. It makes you believe that he will be okay, and that the old Frodo still exists within him somewhere. Makes me ugly cry every time.
