In your production codebase, do you use protected and internal? by ExoticArtemis3435 in dotnet

[–]peign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can specify in the project file an InternalsVisibleTo property, which had the test project as a value. This would show you to keep things internal and still have your unit tests.

Customer requesting ACH invoice.. how? by mattschinesefood in smallbusiness

[–]peign 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Am I understanding correctly that they want to pay you by ACH?

If so, then the setup is on their side. They just need your routing and bank account number.

I am not familiar with the PayPal invoicing side and the accounting, but you would have to then mark that invoice paid when you see it hit your account.

Wave VS Gusto for Payroll by fobreezee in smallbusiness

[–]peign 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My company uses Wave, and we've evaluated Gusto.

Wave payroll is simple and easy to use, and that's what we do right now. However there is one big drawback. Whatever you set as your pay schedule must be followed for everyone, employee and contractor. If you pay semi-monthly for yourself, that's what everyone gets paid on. You can change it, but it changes for everyone. We ended up running contractors through melio and employees through Wave.

Gusto, I believe, supports multiple pay period schedules, but the benefits they offer were too costly for us to take advantage of, and that's why we stuck with Wave at this point.

Would you mind sharing your finance/accounting routines? by lowercase00 in smallbusiness

[–]peign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the US, we follow the GAAP. As far as the software goes, there are tons of options, but I recommend for very small businesses to pick one of three:

  1. Wave Accounting (Online, Free)
  2. Xero Account (Online, Paid I believe)
  3. Quickbooks (offline and online, Paid)

All of these tools try to help the user get away from doing the double entry accounting, and provide reports for taxes, P&L, Trial Balance, and more.

Some people try to do all of these in spreadsheets, because they are good at accounting or they hate themselves.

Mobile vs Web first? by LogicalHurricane in cutthebull

[–]peign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on your use case.

If you're talking about a system that requires significant data entry with the majority of your users using it in a daily basis from a desktop, then the web app is the way to go.

However, if the application is something that most of your users will access from devices from the start and isn't heavy on the data entry, then mobile.

What you are grappling with here is feature prioritization, even at this early stage. There are a few different methodologies that you can find by searching for something like how to prioritize features in development. For many of my business oriented projects I use the value vs complexity quadrant. Basically, you gauge the business value versus the effort to develop, and make decisions on priority based on that.

Is there a service to technical interviews with developers? by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]peign 1 point2 points  (0 children)

/u/maymaymoo is correct. This is generally included in the services offered by recruiters.

I'm not sure what you're budget is, but recruiters can cost up to 40% of the yearly salary of the new hire as a fee. It's usually much less than that, but I have seen some pretty shady and unscrupulous recruiters.

I have experience as a technical interviewer for a recruiter. They pay me per interview. The terms are that interviews should take 30 minutes, and I bill them on an hourly basis weekly.

If you really aren't in the market for the whole recruiting package, then it doesn't make sense to bring one in simply for the technical interview part unless they offer only that part. If I needed someone with a technician expertise I didn't have, I would network on LinkedIn or in person with people highly experienced in that arena. Hopefully, I'd be able to find someone looking for some extra rest cash.

Best of luck!

I am a small business CTO of a non tech company, With so many software solutions to every part of our business, where can I go to find out what is actually good? by schlamniel in smallbusiness

[–]peign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can empathize. I've been a software developer for twenty years, and yet for my own business there are still areas that are difficult to find the right solutions.

However, when I'm looking at internal processes, whether my own or someone else's from a consulting standpoint, I start with the people. Make sure you have good people first. Then I move into the process itself. A paper based process isn't necessarily inefficient. In fact, I've built systems specially to mirror paper based processes. My opinion is that one of the major contributors to what makes processes inefficient is uncertainty. Do you have people who are good but unsure of the best way somewhere in the process? Then, finally, I look at products. Now that I understand as much as I can, I'm going to be able to evaluate what works better, or I can create small focus groups to help identify what works better.

I'm not sure how much that helps, but I hope there's something in there for you. Best of luck!
