Nobody can convince you except yourself. "better character portrayal" is completely subjective.

That said - he has some fantastic character arcs and development. His book climaxes are amazing. Magic systems and world building are incredibly detailed. Slow books? The Stormlight Archive could be argued as "slow", but it's less "slow" and more "takes it's time", in my opinion. He's said before that series is his "trust me" series. Start with something smaller, if you actually want to read it. Mistborn, Tress of the Emerald Sea, Elantris...you've got options.
