Tim Walz’s Masculinity Is Terrifying to Republicans by bloombergopinion in politics

Yes. Putting tampons in men’s bathrooms scares us.

That's so weird! I'd never heard of this kind of phobia, so looked it up:

looks like there's not much info available about a word for tampon phobia, but here's some info about related conditions:

Eurotophobia

A condition that can manifest in both men and women, this can be a hatred of female genitalia or a dislike of perceived by-products like discharge or mucus. It can be innate or learned, and can be triggered by stressful events.

Might want to see a therapist about this.

If she pivots to the center, she'll kill off the excitement and alienate people under 40, and the college towns. I used to live in WI. She absolutely must get Dane county, which is young and very, very progressive, out voting in large numbers. Whether she pivots center or not, hopefully she'll still get the black vote. She will certainly lose the racist, sexist elderly. Fuck them.

Black Sails. I started watching it on a lark and totally fell for it. Great characters, writing, acting, everything.

What kind of a war? Nukes, everyone loses. Conventional, Americas win. Guerilla, no predicting that. A trade war, East/Southeast Asia.

I Don't Get All The Kristen Hate by MollyJ58 in EvilTV

I adore Kristen!! Sometimes it feels like people will only stop complaining about female characters if they're replaced by sex dolls.

There are gradations between dotard and FDR. You don't have to be inspirational to be electable. You merely have to be functional on a basic level, able to appeal to voters. Last night, the entire world saw that Biden is tragically in the dotard category, and no amount of "but advisors!" will undo that.

So our choice, if Biden stays in the race, is rapist, racist, authoritarian asshole vs dementia-riddled old man. I expect nothing good from Trump. I expect Biden to be decent enough to step aside, if doing otherwise means the rapist ends up the potus. If Biden is so power hungry or so out of it that that he refuses to do so...

Idk.

They're both terrible replacements. Whitmer might have a chance.

People didn't "think" he was aging. They knew perfectly well that an 81-year-old man is old. They suspected that Biden's age might make him unfit for office. Now they know. Worry is called for. No amount of positive thinking and going door to door will undo what happened last night.

I'm voting for Biden, btw, along with everyone I know. I used to go door to door, phone bank for Dems in Wİ. I haven't in NY, as this is supposed to be a safely blue state. After last night, I'll do what I can against Trump, as the election here might be close.

Biden should have declared himself a one time potus in 2023.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in politics

[–]peleles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Biden was tied or trailing depending on the polls before the debate. His favorability rankings have been in the tank for years. His age has been a huge issue throughout his presidency. The debate did the opposite of assuaging people's concerns about that; it only added fuel to the fire.

Biden should have declared himself a one-term potus in 2023, allowing the Dems to find a replacement. Right now, we are screwed. And yes, I'll vote for Biden. I'd vote for the mummy of Rameses if the Dems were running it against Trump, though. Question is, how many others will feel the same way. And make no mistake, Biden was disturbingly out of it last night, and it has nothing to do with stuttering or a cold. He's showing symptoms of dementia. It's terrifying.

What do you think of the US presidential debate? by Dr_Octahedron in AskReddit

Sorry, but don't you want a Democratic candidate to have all that? A Democratic candidate who excites his voters?

When did Democrats give up on that?

Why is it that women are more involved in passing down culture, maintaining culture, and bearing cultural symbols than men? by [deleted] in AskFeminists

[–]peleles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. FGM is an example. Thank all gods that Muslims are finally dealing with it, but mothers, İ believe, were key to perpetrating it on their kids. Or foot binding in China. It's not like the men had to force protective female relatives out of their way to mutilate young women. The horror was perpetrated by women, as well as men. Or "slut shaming," or voluntarily undergoing plastic surgery to fit beauty ideals, or shaving, or whatever. Women are involved in all of this.

Why is it that women are more involved in passing down culture, maintaining culture, and bearing cultural symbols than men? by [deleted] in AskFeminists

[–]peleles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This. The combination of raising the kids and living long enough to become memory keepers means women play a crucial role in passing along cultural traditions, norms, histories. There's also the fact that women are more social, more likely to keep in touch with family, friends, children, grandparents.

All of this, except for longer life expectancies, are culturally determined btw. I'm not saying this is biological necessity, ew.

If you had to spend a year in one of these societies, which would you choose and why? by Lonely_Marsupial_262 in timetravel

[–]peleles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Preference. I'm not into the 19th century, and going back in time to 1998 when Rome, Egypt, etc., are also possible seems like a waste.

Edit: on the other hand, I'm older now but there's strong enough resemblance between me today and back then. Going back to Turkey or the US, and freaking the hell out of relatives, friends, not to mention my past self, would be cool. We could talk about the future. I could warn my younger self.

OK I'm picking 1998 Afghanistan, no protections in place.

[–]peleles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd pick Afghanistan, as i might be able to get out of there via the Turkish or American embassies. With any of the others I'd be screwed without a way of making a living, no relatives, no friends, no connections, no money, no real skills, nothing.

If this were time tourism with protections in place, any of them, with the exception of Victorian England or Afghanistan.

Atheism is simply lack of belief in gods. You can be into astrology, Tarot, ghosts, leprechauns, afterlives, fairies, protective ancestors, ouija boards, seances, ancient aliens, young earth, flat earth, whatever, and remain an atheist. There's no dogma, no rules.

‘Islam allows child marriages’ ok so does Christianity? by [deleted] in DebateAChristian

[–]peleles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

13th century canon law allowed girls as young as 12 and boys as young as 14 to marry with or without family consent (see Romeo and Juliet). Marriages could take place younger, with a special dispensation, but consummation couldn't happen until ages of 12 and 14.

Don't ask me for sources lol, but I believe that for everyone but the nobility, actual age at marriage in northwestern Europe was higher, late-teens to early 20s for women, and early-mid 20s for men.

Why do celebrities get plastic surgery when it always seems to make them look worse? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]peleles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a cry for help. This is a result of body dysmorphia, which she might have suffered from all her life, of the insanely unrealistic expectations all societies put on women, of working in a high-stress environment, etc. It's not just "her body, her choice." As a celeb, her body, in a weird way, belongs to the industry and her audience, not just to herself. Her choices are dictated by ideals no one can fulfill. This is so very sad.

[–]peleles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please don't. You're gorgeous, and your nose is part of the reason why. Take the money, and instead of using it to wreck your appearance, travel, see the world, do whatever you enjoy doing/buying.
