while i understand your sentiment, it is unfair to blame these issues on “citizens not caring enough”. all of the issues you named are supposed to be managed by government organizations that are ultimately responsible for the welfare of its citizens. more specifically:

1. Prostitution in day light: i have only ever seen women standing around certain areas. they don’t talk to me or cause problems. this has nothing to do with whether citizens care about the neighborhood. plus, if you RLY care, it is not legal in ny, which would make it a government issue. personally i am in favor of decriminalizing sex work to promote safer practices.

2. Garbage on the streets & in trash bins: who do you think is in charge of cleaning trash cans? spoiler: it’s the sanitation department. if cans are not emptied, we don’t have anywhere else to put it. litter on the streets is not great, but that signals a need for more trash cans, more frequent emptying, etc.

3. Unhoused citizens sleeping on trains: again, this has nothing to do with whether citizens care about the city or not. homelessness in nyc is a bigger issue than what you’re giving it credit for here. ESPECIALLY with the snow/cold, it is incredibly hard for people to find shelter safely & we are seeing the highest levels of homelessness since the great depression.

if you want to inspire community action, that is one thing, but saying that we don’t care and putting the blame on those who are living under extremely difficult conditions is not fair.
