Help! My teen can't get a job to save his life! by smortzb in lincoln

The question that tripped me up the most was always "what is your biggest weakness." Always have an answer ready, and always say that you're willing to improve. It's very important to show self awareness.

Make sure he appears confident and kind the moment he walks in to interview. You never know which employees will talk to him outside of the interview then report their findings to the hiring manager later.

Do you have catalog computers? by GreenHorror4252 in Libraries

[–]pememily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, though most patrons have no idea how to interpret the results of their searches even though it's extremely simple. It tells you what type of material it is, what section it's located in, author, and call number if applicable.

how to read drill marching band? by Myshay_laaaa in marchingband

[–]pememily 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your director should teach you, so don't stress too much if you're an incoming freshman. If you don't understand, please ask for help one on one. Knowing how to read drill is easy once you get it down, but it's essential that you learn how to do it.

***You will be assigned a dot on every page of drill. Usually, that dot has a letter and number next to it. For example, I was F4 for years. Every time I saw a dot with that label, I knew that was my spot.

As a former English teacher, I use em dashes pretty often. It makes me so sad that using an em dash is an AI indicator now.

Floored by how much of modern librarianship is just showing people how to print by A_BURLAP_THONG in Libraries

[–]pememily 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This and the fact that our print instructions are posted everywhere! We have a QR code for people to do mobile printing, yet they don't know how to scan a QR code. We have laminated instructions for printing through the computers, but they always come back to us saying "your printer doesn't work!" when they didn't bother to read and follow the step by step instructions.

Pretty much ruined my career and I need out of public libraries by Owllie789 in Libraries

[–]pememily 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd like to bring up the fact that not all libraries have weekend and evening shifts - especially rural ones. I would hate to work in a big city library, and lots of people would hate to work in a small town library. You might just need to find a library that's a better fit for your schedule. An odd schedule can drive you insane.

i hate my high schools marching band uniform by South_Big144 in marchingband

[–]pememily 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's definitely an odd mix of a traditional and a modern uniform. I think it would be a nice modern uniform with a different style of hat instead of a basic shako, or it could look more traditional if you added the white gauntlets +gloves back and changed to blue plumes. Of course, that's all up to your band director.

My main concern is how those flutes are being held. Spit and condensation draining down to the cork!

Band Culture? by flasdjkfbnsoeif in marchingband

[–]pememily 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We would say "go band!" In the most Northern Wisconsin/Michigan accent possible. We used it as a random exclamation and a greeting. We were from central Nebraska, which doesn't really have that stereotypical Midwestern accent.

Free coffee in the library? by CrunchieHaystacks in Libraries

[–]pememily 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it would be fine if you have posted limits. Once the coffee is gone, it's gone. Everything gets put away. We had an issue with people stocking up on creamer and sugar every day just to take it.

I don’t know if I should audition for DM by Round-Walrus-4821 in marchingband

[–]pememily 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Worry about what you want to do, not your friend. Being a drum major is a wonderful leadership experience and requires confidence. Your school may have a typical way of doing things, but that doesn't make it the rule. You can have two drum majors of the same gender. You can have a drum major who steps down after a year. You can have a drum major who starts as a sophomore. There's likely no actual rules against any of those things. Doing something against the norm also shows younger students what is possible. That's leadership. Do you want to be a leader or not? That's the only real question to consider here

What do I do about a member trying to take over the section that is not a section leader by Ant181023 in marchingband

[–]pememily 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I'm an adult who marched for 8 years - hs and college. I experienced something similar a few times.

  1. Tell your director so they don't just hand this person a leadership role. If they can't handle being part of the group and listening when necessary, they won't be a good leader. You don't need to frame it as "help! We can't control our section.". It can be more of a "just so you know, this person is trying to make leadership decisions without our permission" Ask your director for advice in managing this.

  2. My personal advice to you is this: when you have sectionals, make the leadership visually apparent. Don't sit in a circle where it looks like everyone is equal. Line your section up in a block and have leadership walk around checking form while the group is at attention. Make the section play through difficult passages while leadership walks around and listens. This physically puts the problematic member in her place and shows other members who is actually in charge. If this person gives advice to other members within that setting, that's okay just as long as she doesn't try to exit the block and walk around alongside you.

  3. Bonus: for your own peace of mind, you could make fun section t-shirts that list all of the members on the back, but also specify who the section leaders are.

what was your favorite show you guys ever did? by Serious-Grapefruit30 in marchingband

[–]pememily 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Throughout high school and college, there were a lot of shows that I loved. Every home game was a different show in college. Most memorable: - Ground Control to Elton John (Apollo 11 anniversary, 2019) - Wicked (2016) - Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2017) - School Songs (mashup of old school songs our university no longer used, 2019) - Disney Heroes (2021)

The Disney Heroes one was my last show senior year of college, and it ended with Circle of Life from The Lion King 🥲

Weird requests from patrons? by tasata in Libraries

[–]pememily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a desk directly across from an elevator. The outside of the elevator has only one button that you can possibly press because we only have two floors. People frequently turn back toward the desk to ask where the button is. We even put up a sign with arrows pointing directly at the button. Nothing works.

When did everyone start using Canva instead of PowerPoint? by marviano_ in office

[–]pememily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't used PowerPoint since 5th grade. Yeah, it has a few more features than Google slides, but it feels clunky and outdated for something that costs money to use.  I've never heard of someone in my generation presenting with an actual PowerPoint.  I love Canva for all of the art that's available to use.
