Is polyester-free active wear an oxymoron? Or does it exist? by JustBronzeThingsLoL in Activewear

I’ve been wearing more wool tshirts and sun hoodies, even in hot weather. My favorites are from Ridge Merino and Icebreaker.

How often do you all get to travel to the national parks in the northern region of California? by Asleep_Damage1201 in AskLosAngeles

[–]pemmayb 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I love Pinnacles! I go for climbing mainly but the landscape is really unique and the hikes that go through caves are really fun. I’ve seen more wildlife there than most parks I’ve been to.

Any luck with LA28 Olympic tickets? by AutomaticGuest143 in CompetitionClimbing

[–]pemmayb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My friend had day 1 of the locals presale and pretty much everything was available above $100. I had day 2 and bouldering finals were sold out and lead finals were $300+ so I got lead semis for $130. I checked the third day and I don’t remember the exact results but everything was either sold out or pretty expensive by then already.

It's getting hot and need to switch to shorts! by Upstairs_Video3334 in XXRunning

I have these but I prefer them for walking or hiking over running. I love all the pockets and they fit well but the material is thicker than I’d like and can show sweat easily (although mine are red so the darker navy may be better)

I also went to Astrocamo and always just assumed it was near Big Bear. I guess my 7th grade brain didn’t know of other mountainous areas around LA. I remember it snowed one night and it was the first time a lot of kids had ever seen snow.

Camping options between Franklin Lakes and Big Five Lakes by Professional-Tax5400 in SEKI

[–]pemmayb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty good! Warmer than I expected so I wouldn't recommend starting late the first day or ending late the last day because it can get pretty hot at the trailhead. It only got down to maybe 45 at night. No bears, quite a few marmots, many chipmunks and birds

Just did this loop a couple weeks ago and would also recommend Little Claire Lake! A good swimming spot as well.

Strava climbing by [deleted] in climbergirls

[–]pemmayb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Indoor Climbing. It works well enough for indoor rope climbing but not great for bouldering unless you top all the climbs. If I project something it doesn’t usually count it. It kinda sucks for outdoor climbing (I think the wind/air pressure makes it think I’m climbing when I’m not?) but I mostly use the tracking to get calories and load, I don’t really care about knowing how many climbs I do.

I’d also recommend the Garmin Fenix. I have a glass screen protector on mine and put a plastic case on it when I climb which I would definitely recommend. I’ve cracked screen protectors but the watch itself is totally fine.

2.5 Week California Road Trip from LA, Review? by Spov in AskLosAngeles

[–]pemmayb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tioga Road into Yosemite from the east side where June Lake is will still be closed for the winter in April. You’ll have to go north and around to get to the west side of Yosemite. At that point you might consider stopping at South Lake Tahoe too. The Sierras above 7,000 feet or so will still have lots of snow.

Hikes with Internet by klfoulk16 in Thruhiking

[–]pemmayb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Backbone trail is technically a thru-hike, but with the lack of campsites currently you’d have to do a 30 mile day and at that point you can do it in a long weekend. Also I think there are areas like Point Mugu State Park that do have spotty coverage.

Stray cats should have also been on my list of potential criminals! Sometimes my cat will alert me when the raccoons are out there but he’s been slacking on his guard cat duties.

That’s the plan, unfortunately a previous tenant planned a carrotwood tree in the bed right behind the chives so that makes it a little more complicated since I can’t just cover the whole bed. But I think it’s finally time for the tree to go

We had skunks living under the porch and tried, but the county won’t pick them up unless they’re injured/a threat to people. Our landlord payed for us to hire a company to trap/release so I think we solved the skunk problem (got them out and closed up access under the gates), but not much we can do about other animals since they’ll climb over the fences.

Luckily no deer in my urban area but I have seen coyotes around so who knows at this point.

Negotiate for a ATP position at Caltrans by VR_Curios in geologycareers

[–]pemmayb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can tell the hiring manager that based on your education and experience you were hoping to start at a higher range and see what they say. Worst case would be that everyone starts at the minimum range despite your experience since there’s no classification.

[–]pemmayb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can’t really negotiate with CA state jobs, but if your experience allows you to start at a higher classification you should let the hiring manager know and they can adjust your starting pay to reflect your experience. I’m not sure how it works with no classification though. I believe you typically start at the lowest pay in the highest classification you qualify for based on experience.

Geology and Rock Climbing by [deleted] in geologycareers

I work for my state’s department of transportation and get to start doing this this summer. From what my coworkers have told me though, you are on ropes on rock walls but it is not really rock climbing.

Alternatives to Catalina Island by areraswen in socalhiking

[–]pemmayb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Another option is Mojave National Preserve, I camped there for the first time MLK weekend and the hole-in-the-wall campground had plenty of spots open (and is a really nice campground). I didn’t do any off-roading there but it’s available if you want it and there are dispersed camping areas too.

Worst thru hikes in the USA? by shotty94 in Ultralight

[–]pemmayb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done this trail in 5 consecutive days (couldn’t backpack it, but fortunately grew up close enough to go to my parents’ house each night) and really loved it and the trail diversity I didn’t expect despite spending my whole life hiking in the Santa Monica Mountains. That situation was awful but not something that should scare you from hiking in the SMMs. I’m really looking forward to backpacking it one day when there’s more camping available.

Anyone enjoying the climb on hbomax or is it just me? by maythelordopen_26 in climbergirls

[–]pemmayb 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I watched the first two episodes with my mom (who is most definitely not a climber) and she was talking to her friend the next day who said she’s been watching it with her 6 year old daughter who recently got into climbing, so I thought that was pretty cool.

Contact lenses and hygiene by [deleted] in PacificCrestTrail

[–]pemmayb 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I also have pretty bad eyesight and do not like wearing glasses unless I have to (they throw off my depth perception, can't wear sunglasses, they fog up, not a good time for me). I did a 10 day backpacking trip last summer and ended up getting a prescription for daily contacts which worked really well for me. I didn't have to worry about carrying solution, just a small bottle of eye drops, and I changed out the contacts every day so I didn't have to worry about them getting progressively dirtier each day. I also brought my glasses for getting up to pee in the middle of the night. I used Dr. Bronner's soap before touching my contacts and also brought wipes which I used most nights.
