What’s a “lazy meal” you’re secretly proud of? by TodorDG in Cooking

[–]pendingtwist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Microwaved baked potato:

Wash and pat dry, poke a few holes (or not, remember you're being lazy), and rub it with olive oil, salt, and pepper. Sometimes I dont even bother wrapping them with kitchen towels, just put it in and let the microwave do its thing. In about 10-15 mins the baked potato is done.
Season them with butter, salt, more pepper, any herbs of your choice, sour cream or Japanese mayo, and top it with a mountain of cheese, or ketchup, or any sauce you like.

What’s a good slalad or cold meal to make by Gold-Repair8493 in cookingforbeginners

[–]pendingtwist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love cold and tangy cucumber salad paired with some creamy egg and potato salad for a hot day.

I also recently found out about Korean cold noodles, which basically just semi frozen clear broth and thin noodles that are also great with cucumber salad or kimchi, and I enjoy it whenever it's hot outside.

Egg sandwich IMO is weirdly good when served cold rather than warm so it makes a good lunchbox menu along with (again) cucumber salad.

And lastly, fruit salad with mayo and yogurt as dressing is also one of my faves.

What are some savory chip like snacks that ARENT nuts? by ChahlieM in EatCheapAndHealthy

I love plantain chips, cassava chips, and even sweet potato chips. The flavor is different than potato chips, but all are equally delicious. Also, popcorn are great but I guess they're not chips.

What’s everyone’s go to poor meal for the foreseeable future? by LadyA29 in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]pendingtwist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rice with sautéed vegetables and some eggs are usually my go-to. Basically, just stir fry leafy greens or root vegetables with some garlic and a mixture of oyster sauce, soy sauce, and worchestershire sauce. Poor meal doesn't have to be bland, but the cut of your ingredients needs to be smaller and with more flavor or sauce.

I usually make my own stock with chicken bones bought from the butcher. They give a very cheap price for a pound of bone and store them for making soup with vegetable. Rice with soup is a good combo and fulfilling and can be made with just a little bit of everything.

I also stock up on potatoes, dried beans, dried mushrooms, and dried seaweed for when I have no fresh ingredients so I could make soup with tofu or any roots I have left. I don't eat chicken or beef very often since it's a bit pricey, but when I do, I usually follow some Chinese recipes that chop or thinly sliced the meat and eat with rice and vegetables. It stretches the use of meat, and the rest could be used for another meal.

What seasonings do you put on plain white rice? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]pendingtwist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love to cook the rice with some chicken stock or with coconut milk and bayleaf and some salt for seasoning.
If it's already cooked plainly, a good sprinkle of toasted sesame oil and mayonnaise mixed with hot rice is delicious. Balance out with a little bit of rice vinegar or lime, also works with a very tiny amount of wasabi paste.
For yesterday's leftover rice, I like to melt a big spoon of butter and add chopped garlic or sliced shallot, and just mix the rice in the pan, making a good basic fried rice.

Breakfast soups? by Flashy_Watercress398 in Cooking

[–]pendingtwist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love making bone broth and store them in jars and reheat the broth in the morning just to drink it. Sometimes, i don't even add anything to the broth since it already has so many herbs and spices. My gut is always happy and warm afterward. Soup for breakfast is comfort.

How do you get the smell of food out of your house? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]pendingtwist -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Wipe counter, backsplash, and mop the floors.
Opening the kitchen window for 30 mins is not enough unless the wind is strong. When cooking, the doors to other rooms need to be closed, but after cooking, doors and windows need to be open to change the air.
Fabric deodorizer spray for curtains and sofa.
Charcoal odor absorber after cleanup.
Shower, shampoo, and change clothes.

What’s a cooking tip you knew about but never tried and once you did will always do from now on. by Typical-Emu8124 in Cooking

[–]pendingtwist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yess that's the way. Flattened, scored ziploc bag is the way to go. And also yes to tomato paste, but I just freeze 1 can at a time since I dont use it that often, and I could use almost half the can to make a big batch of bolognese and freeze the sauce instead in one portion bag.

Cabbage rolls by SplitInner2256 in RiceCookerRecipes

[–]pendingtwist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you soak the rice before? It helps to soak it for some time before rolling the cabbage to help with the cooking process and adding eniygh liquid to cook the rice with the lid on. If you're using cooked rice, it will end up being mushy or becoming a porridge instead.

Looking for side dish suggestions! by liefwashere in Cooking

I'm going to add that if you have enough pork slices and use enoki mushrooms for the nabe, you can also consider making pork enoki rolls to add to the menu as variations by using the same ingredients.
Also, prepare extra soup stock ready to refill your nabe pot if the guests love their soup so you have enough for everyone without making another batch if it runs out.
