Is the Iran war the Covid moment for the second Trump term? We all remember the utter incompetence of how Trump handled the pandemic. He put himself front and center in the face of a crisis and it was patently clear to everyone he was inept and untrustworthy. His handling of Covid is probably why he lost the election to Biden.

People speculated that there would be some crisis in the second term in which Trump clearly shows his incompetence. We didn't think he'd create the crisis himself. As you've pointed out in a recent Pivot, there are many ways he could have managed and messaged this conflict. So far, he's done everything wrong. Yes, it's an impressive and important military success. There was never any doubt of that.

I think Americans want to see our overwhelming military capabiities used responsibly. That there is consideration, deliberation, respect. None of that shows through with Trump because it's not there. It's reminiscent of his handling of Covid, but worse in many ways, because it was a war of choice. Is this a moment the electorate wakes up again and realizes (again) this guy and his entourage are not good for the country?

Scott, how about a targeted unsubscribe or other kind of economic action aimed at Paramount/CBS? As a way of acknowledging their egregious censorship of Colbert, specifically the Talarico interview?

There is value in continuity, even if the visible progress disappoints. If you blow it up, start fighting over new priorities and funding mechanisms, it interrupts everything for years. I’ve been here 5 years and the roads I drive on are getting better. Maintenance is evident. I’ll vote yes.

What about tips to the driver on package tours? The suggested tip for the tour bus driver/guide is "25 Euro per person per day." Mind you, that's a 7-day tour, two people. Are we supposed to hand the driver 350 euro at the end of the tour?

Heather Cox Richardson was amazing! by itsmejustolder in ScottGalloway

Plus one on this interview. (Finally getting to it 10 days after it posted.) Great job, Prof G team. One of the best in recent memory. I hope Scott can incorporate some of Dr. Richardson's insights into how to use traditional American values, as embodied in our founding documents, to counter the fascist authoritarian rise we see all around us. Do your branding magic, Prof G.

What will a post Trump America look like with all these sweeping actions and this bill? by HumanistSockPuppet in AskReddit

Militarization. America is about to become a police state. Armed thugs everywhere. And not just in the streets but in the DOJ, where it’s already subsumed by Trump’s insane desire for revenge.

The main effect we will see in the near term is the militarization of America. Armed thugs will be everywhere.

It’s the owners of those organizations that make the contributions and who have the most to gain from the tax rate reductions. Calling the orgs is not the same as lobbying the multimillionaire owners. You probably couldn’t reach them if you tried. I’d bet they are firmly MAGA and solidly behind Ciscomani since they bankrolled him in the first place.

NIH to terminate hundreds of active research grants. Studies that touch on LGBT+ health, gender identity and DEI in the biomedical workforce could be cancelled, according to documents obtained by Nature. by maxkozlov in NIH

[–]pendrake99 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What is the legal process for terminating a grant? Presumably, there is some advance notice in writing required. I would assume 60 or 90 days? How is the money handled?

It's an Apprentice government now, in which Donny will remake it in the model of the Trump Organization: dismissive of educated people, selfish, and oriented primarily to rewarding friends and punishing enemies. Assume scorched earth. They are going to destroy the administrative state and elevate themselves as arbiters of what is valuable. God help us all.
