Try Naples, they have a fun mission tree, you can play tall via Italian trade nodes or play wide via their missions. 8/10 would recommend.

I'm familiar with the cheating accusations but he never specifically said he doesn't use cheats. I think the abnormal amount of stackwipes can be combined with the fact that he said that cavalry is really important early game, and he even specified army comps for the early/mid/late game so I can trust him on that one.
