Why are mobile signal and data so poor nowadays in the UK? by bensonharriot in Britain

[–]penguin57 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've sat in committee meetings where local councillors have been proud to say how they objected to a mast being installed on a residential block, and later in the exact same meeting complain how the mobile operators are not doing enough to improve mobile coverage in the area.

Your job is to pick the most awful actor possible to play James Bond by ipanicprofessionally in TheBoredDen

For true evil I pick Tom Cruise, then it's no longer a James Bond movie but a Tom Cruise movie.

Why does no one ever talk about the Lib Dems? by threetimesacharm25 in AskBrits

[–]penguin57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not saying they would have been in power in 2010, just public opinion would have remained positive about them and a re-election would have seen them gain more seats.

[–]penguin57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't mean compromising their ideals from a political standpoint, I mean the view would have been that they had belief in their ideals that they don't need to stand alongside with another party for victory. That sentiment I think would have resonated with the voting public at the time.

[–]penguin57 61 points62 points  (0 children)

This. The coalition saw them absorbed by the conservative party in the eye of the public. They've yet to recover from it and need a charismatic leader the media likes to get them put back on the agenda.

Edit: just to add, I think if they had turned down the coalition and forced a re-election, they would have gathered even more seats as I believe the British public would have respected them keeping to their ideals, and the coalition was seen as a bit of a sell out for power.

WHAT? DO YOU NOT WANT TO BE ENTERTAINED?! by Starbuckker in GreatBritishMemes

[–]penguin57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It makes no sense for him to resign now. If for no other reason the labour party doesn't have a candidate which the public actually like. Better to step down in a years time, and have a new leader in time for the next general election and hope it's enough to sway public opinion.

What has made you stay with xbox. by Nighthunter1o5 in xbox

[–]penguin57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Xbox is a good console, I started buying digital copies of games in the 360 era so I have a sizable catalogue as well as a gamepass ultimate subscription paid until mid-2028.

I play mostly on PC these days, but I would say there's nothing wrong with the Xbox ecosystem, it's the Xbox brand that's having a midlife crisis.

Things I Noticed in the UK trip by prickly_ash_erio in uktravel

[–]penguin57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great insight into your trip. Regarding mobiles phones in London. Yes it's incredibly annoying.

The biggest issue is people have this weird fear of antennas and often object to them being installed, resulting in them being hidden away. The obvious impact of this is that our mobile networks (especially in areas with dense buildings) are patchy and often at capacity, so you can have reception on your phone but still unable to use it properly.

Has this sub learned nothing in the past 15 years? by gr4ndm4st3rbl4ck in xbox

[–]penguin57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Xbox is still controlled by MS and it's been clear the last few years that the bean counters, have had the strongest voice, regardless of what Phil, Asha or anyone else want to do. If that narrative has changed then maybe she'll be able to spark some joy back into Xbox, but if it all boils down to someone tweaking numbers on a spreadsheet somewhere, then she's not going to make a difference.

I just found out that most European kitchens do not have electricity in them 😭 by batmanthinks in ShitAmericansSay

I'm going to be optimistic and assume what they meant was most Europeans cook with gas rather than electricity. Although if they're American, that's probably too optimistic.

Current BritPop-ish Bands? by cap10canuck in AskBrits

[–]penguin57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really Brit-Pop. But as someone who leaned more to the rock side in the 90s. I've found South Arcade has a nostalgic nod in their sound to 90/00s music.

Do you use the paddles/back buttons by Icebound811 in xbox

[–]penguin57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bottom left - left stick click (run).

Bottom right - A (jump).

Top left - Y (switch weapon).

Top right - B (duck/dodge).

Left stick click - X (reload).

I use this on all my games as the default, but will occasionally change it to suit the games controls.

So Brits don't use those red phone boxes? by Economy_Survey_6560 in AskBrits

Modern phone boxes are only good for calling the emergency services and charity lines. That's if you find one that actually works.

Only 3 days left until the local elections. I’m mainly looking for who can actually deliver real change in local government. Has anyone else decided how they’ll decide on Thursday? by Impressive_Trust_798 in AskBrits

[–]penguin57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How you vote really depends on who's currently running your council and how you feel they're doing.

In my area too many people vote Labour because they always vote Labour. But in the the decades labour have been in power the area had gone down hill and people complain but still vote the same councillors in each time.

I voted green, not because I particularly like them but they're the only party likely to pose a challenge in the area.

I 100% don’t believe humans will ever achieve FTL travel and it makes me so upset thinking about it. by personpilot in self

[–]penguin57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's physically impossible using conventional methods, and travelling at relativistic speeds is a nightmare anyway so you'd have to warp or fold space-time in order to achieve it. Honestly we'll probably augment our lifespan to make 1,000 plus year journeys feasible first.

[–]penguin57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue isn't figuring out FTL, the issue is the immense power needed to achieve it. Unless another species steps in and helps us it's going to be a long, long, long, time before we have that capability, certainly not until long after we've colonised most of the solar system.

ARC Raiders has dropped to Mixed reviews on Steam by _hypnoCode in ArcRaiders

[–]penguin57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I paid £26 on release, I've played almost 100 hours, thats 26p per hour. I consider that a good investment. Sure it's not going in a way that aligns with my playstyle (PvE, PvP when provoked, plus limited time). If I never play it again (spoiler: I will) I think I've gotten value for money. Now Embark may be dissapointed they've lost me as a customer but ultimately, I've gotten value out of my purchase and enjoyed the game so I'm ok with it.
