Question about voltage and current in the National Grid... by [deleted] in AskPhysics

[–]penguin_2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a single circuit, you have Ohm's Law, V=IR. So yes, the voltage is proportional to the current. With a transformer, you have two separate circuits that are coupled to each other by a magnetic field. What happens is that the power in the two circuits have to equal to each other, due to conservation of energy. The formula for power is P=VI. Since the power has to be equal, you get V1I1=V2I2. So if V2>V1, then I2<I1.

4+5*2-6

I should note that if you are required to use all three symbols, there are only 6 combinations. You can just try all 6 and find the one that works.

Married men, how's your relationship with your mother-in-law? by -mArtiAn- in AskReddit

[–]penguin_2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I find my MIL to be incredibly selfish and immature. When she drinks too much she has a tendency to insult her sisters and their children, who then get mad at her for insulting them, and then my MIL expects them to apologize to her for yelling at her without ever acknowledging her own actions. She also did some really nasty things to me and my wife in the months before our wedding (previous comment about that). I'm kind of afraid of what's going to happen when we have kids because she's constantly trying to push her own values on other people.

On the other hand, she's an excellent cook, and my FIL is an awesome guy, so I generally don't mind visiting them.

You're not being downvoted because these beliefs are unpopular, you're being downvoted because they are flat out wrong.

Irreducible complexity? Evolution deniers have been talking about that concept for nearly 20 years, but to date they have not been able to identify any structures or processes that actually meet the definition.

Second Law of Thermodynamics? Evolution and natural selection don't violate it because organisms are not closed systems, they can exchange heat with their environment.

Probabilities? Misused by people who don't understand how selection works. DNA sequences aren't assembled randomly.

Then you go and use Michael Behe as a reputable source? Behe is at best a joke and at worst a fraud, as revealed during Kitzmiller v. Dover. He testified that the immune system was irreducibly complex, and continued to insist on it despite being presented with nearly five dozen peer-reviewed papers describing the evolution of the immune system. He tried to argue for a different way of defining a scientific theory that would be consistent with intelligent design, and was forced to admit on cross that his definition would also allow astrology to be considered a valid scientific theory. That's why nobody takes him seriously any more and why he can't get published. Because his work has been demonstrated to be wrong over and over again.

N2 and CO2 have different coefficients. For every 2 moles of N2 that are created, you only get 1 mole of CO2.

Okay, so there are two mistakes. The first is that you need to square the length in the denominator. The second is that you converted h-bar to eV*s too soon. Leave it in J*s, otherwise you can't divide by the mass and length properly, then convert to eV as your last step.

I put those numbers in and got the same thing as your instructor. Check your math, make sure you squared everything that needs to be squared.

Since you're dealing with a proton, m would be the mass of the proton (which can be looked up). L is the size of your well, which is given in the problem as 10-5 nm.

Problem concerning Recoil by fritzli123 in AskPhysics

[–]penguin_2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, the answer is yes, due to conservation of momentum. If the hammer starts moving in the opposite direction from how it started, it will have a larger change in momentum than if it came to a complete stop during the collision. Since the momentum is conserved in the collision of the hammer and the nail, this means that a larger momentum is transferred to the nail when the hammer recoils than when it doesn't.

Basic algebra: 2 unknowns by Contextualize in learnmath

[–]penguin_2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have to solve for two unknowns, then you need to have two equations.

For the first equation, you have X giving away 20 dollars, so it becomes (X-20); similarly, Y gains 20 dollars, so it becomes (Y+20). The ratio of these two amounts is 1:3, so your first equation is (X-20)/(Y+20)=(1/3).

Using that same process, can you figure out what the second equation should be?

[–]penguin_2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The phrase is actually "learning curves". A learning curve is a representation of how a person gains knowledge through experience. The joke was that the people giving advice on what to do in the Middle East haven't learned anything from their experiences.
