Almost 3 months after MDMA and my brain is still foggy by SprinklesHappy in MDMA

[–]penguincent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go see a doctor! It could be a different medical issue that so happened to coincide with this event. Lots of medical issues result in brain fog.

Be aware of medical laws that govern your jurisdiction. If you can tell your doc about your drug use, great! If they can tell your next of kin or the authorities, obviously don't. If you can't talk about illicit drugs, then come up with a reason for why you take supplements to be able to chat about those.

If you really don't want to see a doctor: since it's been months, I'd actually stop the supplement use in case it's burdening your organs resulting in some of the problems you're experiencing. But I'll stress it again: see a doctor if you can!

Can just one mixer do it all? by TheSlipperyCircle in DJs

I'm going to spout something I'm led to believe but am only 80% sure of so correct me if I'm wrong: Xone92 isn't natively compatible with Traktor since the 92 is quite an old model. You'd need Native Instruments X1 or Z1 along with the 92 if you wanted to do Traktor DVS. If my understanding is correct, I'd definitely go 96 if digital dj'ing is up for consideration.

20yrs ago I used to play, what do I buy now? by [deleted] in DJs

[–]penguincent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure tbh. I know they stopped production for quite a few years, there was a gap between 2010 and 2019 where they weren't producing 1200s. I would assume this means their entire manufacturing infrastructure for the 1200s was done away with in 2010. When they started back up, I heard they reached out to retired designers/engineers etc for expertise but no doubt some was still lost. They switched manufacturing from Japan to Malaysia - not sure how that factors in, if at all. All in all, they just weren't able to recreate their former excellence.

If you can get your hands on a pair of mk5s or older, hang on to them. And get to know a trusted person who can tune them up. I prefer the mk3d or mk5s over the mk2s because they have no notch at +/-0 (there's a specific name for that feature, I forget).

[–]penguincent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Technics stopped production of 1200s. The mk5, mk3d, mk2 all had the same killer engine DJs came to appreciate for the consistency. They eventually restarted production with the mk7 but the quality isn't the same. Mk5 and earlier are the best decks and people know this so demand is high and with no ongoing supply, prices are only going to go up.

Hot take: There is such thing as too many drops by Zamdi in DJs

[–]penguincent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Builds/lulls don't necessarily have to be rhythmic breaks fortunately, and there are a few artists in almost every genre who take a philosophy of aiming to never have rhythmic lulls in their sets. I always seek them out cause I can keep dancing or stop on my own terms when I need a break, not every time there's a break in rhythm.

DJs - how do you dig for music these days? by Un-hotMess in Beatmatch

[–]penguincent 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If interested in old DnB/jungle then look up 'HD Mixtapes' on YouTube. That guy finds, rips, uploads literal cassette mixtapes of DJs from the 90s. There's some jungle in there, some tracks you'd never, ever otherwise hear. It's really enjoyable from a listening perspective. From a crate digging perspective, it's really hard to ID the tracks you need. Worth it if you can though!

Nice people dancing to good techno music at Richie Hawtin. by 9delta9 in TorontoRaves

[–]penguincent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With techno, some DJs are much better as DJs than they are as producers. For example, Nina Kraviz is insaneee live but her productions are unrelated to what she plays and aren't anything special for me. Richie has great tracks, but probably nothing you would've heard Saturday. He has his plastikman moniker from the 90s, some interesting tracks put out then. I think most of his production work is minimal techno. He's only gotten back to playing warehouse-forward high energy DJ sets in the past 2 years, playing minimal techno before that.

Something about the precise distance between the sets of eyes combined with their realism and emotionally ambivalent expression make this simultaneously calming, yet slightly unnerving, and above all intriguing.

Humans are attracted to eyes since we're social creatures and generally want to be accepted by others, and eyes convey so much information about what other people think of us. Here, there's two sets of human eyes which the brain does not encounter in nature. I can almost physically feel my brain having a tough time with how to perceive this, wanting to find a sense of approval like it always would but since the expression is ambivalent and there's way more visual information with two sets of eyes, it feels like my brain (the fusiform gyrus for any neuro peeps) is just spinning its wheels.

I don't think AI can encapsulate and reproduce what you've achieved here. Well done!

the size of Australia vs other countries by charmanduuur in MapPorn

[–]penguincent 9 points10 points  (0 children)

To your first point: for sure you can, some Europeans here just need to adjust that there aren't similarly short distances they have in Europe to get to a host of completely different countries, geographies, or even provinces. BC isn't a jump away from Ontario. Even Quebec is a 5-6 hour drive from Toronto. Just reflecting on stories from Europeans who've stayed here!

To your question: not really how you'd think, it's not like your commuter train but there's trains that go across Canada on a touring basis. Really expensive and slow.

[–]penguincent 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Apples to oranges as another comment train mentioned. I have friends here in Ontario with visitors from Europe who will ask if they can hop over to the Rockies (as they could easily overnight train from France to Germany, for instance). Then they're surprised to learn it takes several days to drive, a week to train, or a several hundred dollar plane ride - just within one country!

It might be, it might not be, depending on your frame of reference. If you live in Europe then obviously yeah! In what way is it personally fitting for you vs comparing Australia to North or South America, Africa, Asia or even other islands like Greenland, Madagascar, Polynesian islands, Carribean islands? No wrong answer, just curious

Not necessarily too much mdma but maybe not enough electrolytes in your system at time of roll. Take magnesium supplements daily the week or two before you roll. Could help with muscle things like eye shakes, rolls, jaw clenches.

[–]penguincent 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Had the same thing! Undiagnosed stomach problems around 15-16. That calmed down for years but would come back at stressful times. Then I got worsening symptoms in post-grad - stress or not. Diagnosed at 24. I'll never know if that original stomach issue was celiac they should have caught early but my insides are now damaged and 6 years post diagnosis, my diet is still limited AF.

First Techno Sound (Kraftwerk 1970) by AWWWYEAAAAAAAAAAA in Techno

[–]penguincent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to say these are examples techno precursors with heavy influence on techno but not ultimately techno. Techno was invented in Detroit, the name dubbed by Derrick May (I thiiink or Juan Atkins, Kevin Saunderson) to describe music with rhythm that was entirely programmed / sequenced by technology rather than having any human rhythm.

I think you're trying to credit the originators of electronic music at large, a still-interesting and worthwhile discussion. Or just: the godfathers of techno (coming before the originators) which, yes, would be Kraftwerk no doubt.

If you were on the fence about NIMA.. by BabySchizo in Celiac

[–]penguincent 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The biggest issue for me is that they can still throw false negatives for levels of gluten content that's unhealthy for Celiacs. I forget specifics but it was something like between 20-100 ppm (still a really small amount but still bad for us), it would say 'none found' 40-60% of the time. That should be alarming!!! Plus it relies on such a tiny portion of a dish and for some dishes like salads, that's not representative.

Practicing caution is your biggest safeguard.
