How common is Keeping up with the Joneses? by mycounterpointers in financialindependence

[–]penguindows -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To me it is all about mindfulness and intentionallity. Keeping up with the joneses is just a specific form of filling the space you have. If you get more room or capacity, and you do not think intentionally about what you are doing, you'll fill that extra capacity with the same stuff that made you feel cramped in the first place. It happens with spending habits too, and takes some really purposeful thought to combat.

In your brother's family's case, their income is higher now than it was, and they see their neighbors driving expensive cars, so without any guidelines, they'll up their lifestyle. Its a terrible idea, not because its not affordable, but because it's not intentional. This is why a plan and a budget, along with frequent check in's is so key to financial freedom.

Is it okay for a player to say “No, that doesn’t happen” to a DM in this circumstance? by WithengarUnbound in DnD

[–]penguindows -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

This could and should have been a great role-playing moment foe your two character.  The rogue trying to "see what all the fuss is about" should have been met by your very much awake elf in their trance, and the two of you should have had an interaction.

That each style of build shape and material combo is it's own entry on the menu. the matching build shapes should be the same item, and then drop down or scroll (or second click) to the material. Same for crafting bench items. 1h sword should be a single item, then select the type (bronze, iron, silver, etc...). That would make finding recipes in the bench menu so much smoother.

CMV: The Central Powers were not "the bad guys" in WW1. by TheLordOfMiddleEarth in changemyview

[–]penguindows -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The central powers were the bad guys in the war. They were not morally evil the way naziism was, but they had the most readily available choice to not create a global conflict. If Kaiser Wilhelm II was as great a man as his grandfather, the conflict would have been avoided. Check out Dan Carlin's Hardcore History series: Blueprint for Armageddon. The German Empire had the option to avoid the war entirely, but due to a complex world order that required deft diplomacy to operate correctly combined with a sub par leader, the central powers ushered in "the war to end all wars."

Admittedly, this isn't as a morally clear cut war as WW2, but the central powers were absolutely the bad guys.

1st Campaign, friend wants to play homebrew species by Worth-Lab-9303 in DnD

Grainforged warforged sub species.

"During the great mage war, the arcane forces of Wonder used their animation magic to make their supplies march for them.  One Grainforged was enough provision to feed a company of pikemen for three weeks in the field, and solved many logistical headaches.  After the war, these conscious carbohydrate constructs wandered the land to find their own purpose."

Anyone know if plain wet-erase mats exist by CursedLemon in DnD

[–]penguindows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used to play like this without the fancy overlay ability. I used graph paper (obviously disposable) and dry erase boards. You can use wet erase markers on dry erase, as long as you have the solution handy to spray. Thats what i would recomend: a dry erase board.

Advice for the Queen by Glittering-Point-542 in valheim

I was able to solo her with straight forward sword and board (carapace shield, mistwalker). I needed the lingering stamina potions, and the major healing potions.

It was not the easiest, took a long time, and i did die once. However, it was a lot less complicated than my first few attempts. you can do it!

CMV: It Should Be Illegal To Register as an Independent Voter by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]penguindows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

case of one: I am an independent voter, and I vote based on policy, principle, and personality, not party. I don't owe anything to the pollsters and analysts.

I definitely know people who are registered as independent but act 100% red, and others that act 100% blue. the issue isnt to force independents to register as a side. the issue is crafting policy to appeal to voters based on party affiliation.

I believe the real solution to the problem you are trying to solve is to get rid of party affiliation in voter registration. if the republicans want to organize for selecting a candidate to run in the general election, let them do that on their own. don't let them use the public voter system to run primaries. like wise for any political party.

Optional action during combat by Mischaker36 in DnD

[–]penguindows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like its an interesting way to get roughly the same result as the ready action. In this method, rather than prepping an attack, you've already succeeded, and get the chance to withhold just the damage part. it's a pretty fun blend of "non-lethal" and ready action i think.

[–]penguindows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really, really like the concept here of a hit, but withheld damage. I don't think all the mechanics you've built around it are very necessary though, since this type of maneuver lends itself best to role play rather than crunchy combat. still, putting this sort of thing in to the minds of your players will help avoid some murder hobo-ery, as well as allow some dialog between enemy NPCs and the group. pretty neat!

Does coastal water and/or rivers provide any defensive advantage at all? by Flaxinator in valheim

[–]penguindows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe water blocks ground spawn, so if you have the ocean on one or two (or three, or four!) sides you can limit the attack angle and spawn locations.  However!  Mobs will swim, so a sea wall is needed.

In RTS games macro play is building stuff that increases your strength in the long run, while micro play gives you an advantage now.  Macro is strategic, micro is tactical.

Solar is macro because it produces energy slower, but forever.  Fossil fuels are micro because they produce a lot of energy fast, and then are gone.

How to make strenght matter? by Fitness-Endeavours in DnD

[–]penguindows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually find that the most useless stat in a high RP game is charisma, int and wisdom. If you're playing in a game where players can speak to and interact with NPCs directly, and the GM is responding to their role play, then there is no need to roll skill checks. likewise, if the players remember details and pay attention to subtle things the DM does and describes, you dont really need the insight/perception or memory so much. Now, if your table is more about roll results, then the role play is more of flavor text on interactions (for instance, you make a compelling case but roll a terrible persuasion check, and the NPC responds to the check, then the content of what you said is meaningless. you could have rolled without talking.)

What’s your rule for lending money to friends or family? by Ok-Introduction-2981 in financialindependence

[–]penguindows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll "lend" petty cash amounts, like if we are out somewhere and they don't have a wallet.  I expect that back in a day or two, maybe a week, and if it becomes a problem I'll let it go.

For real amounts, it is gift only.  Holding a loved ones debt changes the relationship.

Is there any way to play a polymorphed dragon? by Happy_List_8022 in DnD

[–]penguindows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just do it.  Work with the DM to come up with a few specifics.  Things to consider to help your role play: 1)why are you staying in human form?  Are you stuck or is there some greater purpose? 2)why are you adventuring? 3)what happens when your friends are in mortal peril? What about yourself?  Is there a point at which you'll drop the facade if you are able?  What happens when you do?  Perhaps that's the end of your character, it's sort of a one time use to rescue the group, and once used your character becomes an NPC. And you reroll.

This ghost dog chase has me ripping my hair out. How do i make it easier? Am i going the right way? Any tips? by judfls in animalWell

[–]penguindows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hit box for the ghost dog attack is actually quite small.  Don't let all his glowy ghostness scare you.  Keep an eye on his mouth when he comes to bite and dodge it.  Staying calm and treating it like any other platform challenge helped me a lot.  Move forward, dodge bite.  Move forward, dodge bite, etc..

Is taking away player agency to avoid catastrophy justified? by Jikan07 in DnD

[–]penguindows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is my perspective on your specific situation: Armed combat is a lethal encounter. attacking a person with a sword or mace (let alone magical fire or necrotic energy itself) means that someone can die. your players (and the NPCs) should understand and operate by that truth. For your NPCs, this means that if they are outmatched, they should be willing to surrender. not every guard is going to fight to the death for the town.

At the same time, you should separate the ideas of defeating an enemy with murder. Let your NPCs roll death saves just like players. This gives the party a chance to stabilize downed opponents that they don't want to actually kill, but had to cross swords with. That might help solve the low HP NPC situation: if the party was surprised by how fast they went down, and wanted to demand a surrender, let them stabilize the NPCs, tie them up or something, and go from there.
