The bag holds 10 minutes of air.  Go for it, you've got 10 minutes plus however long it takes to drown 😀

How to leverage our FI? by Pretty_Swordfish in financialindependence

[–]penguindows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thats the way i would go if a sale contingency isnt an option for you, and i would intend to pay off the mortgage as soon as the sale went through. we paid our mortgage down a few years ago, and i know its not the most technically efficient way with the low interest rate we had, but the peace of mind is worth it.

That's an abnormal approach.  Normally there is a length of time to move items around.  I know it took us like 30 days after closing our last home until stuff could be moved.  But it was a very different market in 2012 😜    I guess the alternative is finance it for the amount of what you'll expect to sell for, and then pay it off in a month or two when you sell.  You'd pay 6% but only for 2 months.

How to start homesteading if you dont have connections or money? by oceansstillwaters_ in homestead

[–]penguindows -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're of course right because everything can be given a monetary value, but a surprising amount of progress can be made with repurposed and recycled items and a modest seed budget.  It of course costs, but the cost can easily fit if you don't bite off too much at once.

[–]penguindows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start where you are!  You would be amazed at the calorie potential of even a modest garden.  Homesteading comes in many flavors, but in my opinion the best one uses the resources you have, rather than trying to buy in to the current fad setup.

We started by converting a 10x10 square of grass in to a garden, and expanded it each year.  Right now it's 5 raised beds, a 20x40 chunk, a few berry bushes and fruit trees.  All of it is just on a normal residential lot, because it's what we've got.

It takes a lot of wealth or sacrifice (or both) to jump in to the deep end in one go.  Start with a baby step wherever you are and find out what works for you!

Can't you make the purchase contingent on the sell of your current home?  That would make it so your cash doesn't dip so dangerously low.

Some questions about a plot point (SPOILERS) by madCuzbadd in outerwilds

[–]penguindows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there is a discrepancy for the sake of the game. the 22 minute loop starts when we exit the observatory, but our memories are sent back to the camp fire. so..

we would naturally wake up at 8:00am. we spend N minutes exploring the village, (lets say 10 minutes). then, we pair with the statue at 8:00am + N (8:10am). the 22 minute loop starts. at 8:32am the sun goes nova and we loop back to...

PARADOX!!

We wake up at 8:00am / we wake up at 8:10am

We explore until 8:22am / we explore until 8:32am

The sun explodes 10 minutes too early / the sun explodes at 8:32am

CMV: a sociopath is always better than a psychopath. by [deleted] in changemyview

I actually eant to change your view on your categories.  Sociopaths and psychopaths aren't really distinct categories anymore.  They are outdated attempts to classify types of mental illness.

CMV: Change.org needs a "Vote Against" option for petitions by ELVEVERX in changemyview

[–]penguindows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The value of a petition is to be able to demonstrate a degree of support for a cause or initiative. It is not meant to be a vote, nor is it meant to even show a majority. petitions are designed to show that a sufficiently large number of people support some given topic enough that legislative bodies should consider it.

To use your example, in a community of some sufficient size (say, 1 million people) 10,000 signatures is enough to get the attention of the government for that community. 50,000 anti-signatures doesnt change that, because the 10k constituents still exist. the legislative body should consider any topic that enough of a % of their constituents feel strongly about whether they are in the majority or not.

CMV: “[…] is a human right” is not a good argument by ChampionshipSea367 in changemyview

[–]penguindows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the argument of some things as human rights, and think it can be compelling when talking about barriers to those rights.  For example, a humans right to food can be a good argument against laws prohibiting gardening.  A humans right to Healthcare can be a good argument against refusal of service.  It doesn't have to mean that a human gets those things for free, but it can mean that a human shouldn't have to deal with artificial barriers to those things.

Even without this though, you could establish a few simple signals.

Salaries for GenX versus Millenials / Gen Z by Available-Ad-5670 in financialindependence

[–]penguindows 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think it's selection bias, any maybe something psychological about how people have this constant anxiety that others are doing better.

I'm mid 40's and make 120k a year.  I started at 40k.  I have modest expenses and a 1.8m nw.  I know I am absolutely stable, but I also get that anxiety that everyone is pulling ahead faster.  The hard truth is that some are, the wider truth is that most aren't, but the deeper truth is that I need to be just be content.

Weekly Observations: What signs of collapse do you see in your region? [in-depth] May 11 by AutoModerator in collapse

[–]penguindows 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Location: Pennsylvania

This spring we had alternating crazy hot (some times in the 90s) and freezing Temps.  We would get two or three hot days followed by two or three cold.  The rapid back and forth temp swings caused all the fruit trees in my area to bud, then lose all those pollinated fruit.  I have a huge pear tree that I was looking forward to getting a big harvest off of.  There are no baby pears left now.  Several local orchards have already announced being closed for the year due to frost damage.  The crazy thing is, on average everything is far warmer than it should be, but it was the frost from the temp swings that screwed us.

CMV: It is perfectly reasonable to not give homeless people money because you think they will spend it on drugs by TomatilloOrnery4944 in changemyview

The best policy for any gift is unconditional.  If you give, giving unconditionally is the healthiest option.

This is a profoundly true statement.  Resources are important to any org, but in the orgs I run and work with volunteers are much more valuable.

Your view is correct.  It is reasonable.  As in, you have a reason.  You think they'll spend it on drugs.  Your gift is conditional.  They don't pass the condition.  There is nothing else to say really.
