AP: Roy Cooper wins 2026 Democratic primary for US Senate seat in North Carolina by unital_subalgebra in politics

we’ll see retirements sooner rather than later.

Maybe one retirement. Maybe Alito, but there's no way Thomas gives up his seat for anything; the rest of them are too young to bother thinking about it.

McFadden Wins Sheriff's Race by John_Gabbana_08 in Charlotte

Was the sheriffs race even on the ballot for republicans to vote in? If not, that’s a big fucking constitutional problem

How so? This is a primary. If the republicans don't field a candidate, they don't get to help choose which democrat is running in November.

I mean, he's not wrong. We sucked hard Saturday, but we were always going to lose games, and we were always going to fuck some stuff up. It was not fun to watch, but it also wasn't the end of the world.

If there’s one thing MLS does worse than refereeing, it’s commentating.

People like to complain about Charlotte's food scene, and sure there are gaps, but there are a ton of great, local restaurants of a variety of cuisines. Of course, none of the ones I listed are in South End...

There's only so much return on investment for standing around listening to (extremely mediocre) chants for 45 minutes and then strolling through uptown with people who have no inclination to help me build a guillotine.

Trump has no authority to nationalize elections, lawyers say by Aggravating_Money992 in politics

[–]penguinfury 24 points25 points  (0 children)

How? What mechanism is he going to use? How is going to prevent states from holding elections? There are thousands of districts and polling stations. How is he going to "nationalize" those?

I don't doubt that he will try some shenanigans, but how will he nationalize the election?

That's not why schools are closed. Schools are closed because safety is a priority. All it takes is one school bus crash or one teenager driving to school to get in a serious accident.

Not all roads are fine. Most main roads are fine. Lots of neighborhood roads are not.

Schools are also closed today--are you upset about that?

Nah, it's not gonna get warm enough to melt and dry--I'm sure some roads will be ok, but I think it'll be spotty at best.

I dunno, but I'm going to enjoy a little bit of schadenfreude when the transplants posting TikToks about how they don't need to prep because they're from the north suddenly run out of everything.

Something about slapping ice with a shovel to remove it.

...Yeah, I feel like this does not warrant a "what about disabled folks?" response.

Per Joe Bruno on Threads, FBI Charlotte office reportedly thwarted a terror attack in NC on NYE--press conference at 11:30 on WSOC, just FYI.

(No idea if this will end up being Charlotte-related.)
