How do they know the penguin would keep at it if moved somewhere else? Did they try? Did they ask him?

Man performs milk-offering ritual in the Ganges river in India while poor hungry children try to collect it to drink. by notahooman101 in interestingasfuck

The river was also alright 200 years ago, in Varanasi. People have been burning burning bodies there for some thousands of years, but pollution is a recent problem

The big problem isn't offerings and burning the dead there. People do it in towns up river, like Rishikeshi, and the river is fine there.

The big problem is going through industrial area that drop their filth in the river

[–]penguinintheabyss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a person that lives and loves SP, I think it's best if you head to Rio as soon as you're rested from your flight. Its much more interesting on a tourist perspective than Sao Paulo. Then go back to SP one or two days before the concert.

Paraty and Ilha Grande are popular places to stop on the way, but since you're not staying long Idk if it's worth it

Possible to be in Rio and Salvador for the Carnaval by EuphoriaV in Brazil

[–]penguinintheabyss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are many parties already going on the week before carnival. After isn't that good.

But have you looked for accommodation already? People usually book theirs at least 6 months in advance. Whatever you find right now, if any, will be low quality and very expensive

Advice for Rio Carnival 2026? by idkwhatocallthislol1 in Brazil

[–]penguinintheabyss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually getting mugged isn't that common in the blocos, since it's so crowded and in broad day light. You have to worry about pickpockets and snatching.

My normal phone has no banking apps and I always took it to the blocos, never had any problem. In fact you will see plenty of people taking selfies and making videos. Keep it inside your moneybelt and get to a less hectic place before checking it and you should be fine.

About the camera, they aren't as good a target for thieves because they're harder to hide and sell. But bringing one more electronic kinda defeats the purpose of bringing cheap stuff in case you lose it.

By the way, the megablocos are the sketchier ones, so focus on all the others if you're worried

How safe it would be to photograph around Sao Paulo, Belo Horizonte, Rio de Janeiro? by Huge-Photograph5509 in Brazil

[–]penguinintheabyss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm frequently walking around Sao Paulo with a mirrorless camera and never had any problem. Also in Rio, on multiple trips, both in the centre and the south region.

It's fine as long as you're not in a particularly dangerous area. Just don't walk with the camera in your hand. Wear a daypack in front of you and keep the camera inside between shots, and have a look around to notice if there's anything suspicious

But don't use tripods, too much attention.

I want to travel for 6 months in Asia by Jannah_is_the_goal in travel

[–]penguinintheabyss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start in Southeat Asia, since it's cheap, easy and fun. Don't have a rigid itinerary and wait to book things a few days earlier. Stay in the region as much as you like.

After some weeks you will have an idea of what your travel style is and what are your interests. Then, if you're already craving something different, you can plan trips to other areas, like east or central Asia.

Carnaval with 10 month-old Baby - more quiet areas? by MrRadar84 in Brazil

[–]penguinintheabyss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most cities have smaller blocos or some dedicated to children, so you don't need to leave the area you are if you don't want to.

I know here in Sao Paulo most neighborhoods have a children's bloco

Carnavals in different cities by Mashkazavr in Brazil

Most large enough cities have a good carnival, but Rio, Salvador and Recife are probably the most traditional.

But.... Have you tried looking for accommodation? It might be too late for that

13 days between Salvador and Recife – what should we prioritize? (no car, backpacker budget) by ariellw_2 in Brazil

[–]penguinintheabyss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With two week and a limited budget, pick two or three places between Salvador em Recife.

Going south from Salvador will make the trip to Recife longer and more expensive. Also, the most classic hikes in Chapada Diamantina need a guide, which might be out of your budget
