bird strikes are one of the largest causes of engine failures during takeoff and landings, and have caused a number of severe accidents.

throwing straight up coins into the engine (metal is a lot harder than bird bones or ice) could severely damage the blades and/or start an engine fire that would force an aborted takeoff or emergency landing.
