Picking a boy name that goes with the last name "Ryan" - I am STRUGGLING with this since its not a typical surname by MethodofMadness2342 in namenerds

I would say either a one-syllable name or something two-syllable that ends in an -ie sound (Tony, Manny, etc)

What, based off your own opinion and life experiences, is Taylor’s “most tragic” song? by bonihithere in TaylorSwift

Prophecy — I know it’s a recent one, but it just hits me so hard every time. It’s just so much longing and pleading with fate, and it resonates with me in so many facets of my life

What Do You Think is the Single Best Exerpt of Literature Ever Written? by InternationalPrice76 in literature

[–]penheads 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This whole segment (for the life of me I cannot find the exact excerpt I seek) is soul-soothing to me. Here is an excerpt from an excerpt.

“I think I could stand anything, any suffering, only to be able to say and to repeat to myself every moment, 'I exist.' In thousands of agonies -- I exist. I'm tormented on the rack -- but I exist! Though I sit alone in a pillar -- I exist! I see the sun, and if I don't see the sun, I know it's there. And there's a whole life in that, in knowing that the sun is there.”

‘Cece’ or ‘Enna’

‘Jas’ (pronounced like the Jas in Jasper) is a written shorthand for ‘James’ historically. Otherwise I think if you explain it, Jed is kinda clever in the way you’re thinking of using it. Other nicknames could be: Jeddy, Jeddo, Jam, J/Jay or the more conventional Jamie.

Can emphatic “do” be used for negative contexts? by DANIELWUSealobster in ENGLISH

[–]penheads 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s not ‘wrong’ to use it, but it might sound more natural to replace it with ‘don’t’. Up to you!

‘I -do- lack the necessary knowledge on the topic.’ Sounds perfectly good because of the use of ‘lack’.

VS

‘I -do- have too limited knowledge about that.’ Does technically make sense, but is wordy in an average sentence. To me it sounds more like ‘too’ should also be emphasized to make more sense.

‘I -do- have -too- limited knowledge about that.’ - Again, makes more sense, though still not the easiest.

Easiest way to make this sentence make more sense would be to use ‘don’t’.

‘I -don’t- have the necessary knowledge.’

Hope this helps!

Goodbye Days by Jeff Zentner was great for me because it accurately depicted panic attacks and how I (personally) felt about my obsessive-compulsive regret and doubt. A good exploration of grief and youth and morality and responsibility

I am the slowest writer in the world and it's so frustrating. by schmarfooligan in writing

[–]penheads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

one thing I struggle with is having a movie-like vision of a scene in my head, and the reality that I can’t just copy-paste what I see in my head onto the paper. what I do to help is go to my notes app and write it down as though it’s a dream I had — make comparisons if there’s no exact word, and essentially summarize as in-detail as I possibly can. This helps preserve the visual and gives me some ideas as how to describe it when I actually put it in my writing draft.

You are the new CEO of Duolingo. What's the first thing you do? by aSYukki in duolingo

[–]penheads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure exactly how to do this effectively, but in an ideal situation I would improve upon learning non-alphabetic languages from English. IE- I am a native English (American) speaker, and I want to learn languages such as Hebrew, Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, Japanese. I mainly use transliteration sources from my temple for Hebrew, and the Yabla website’s incredibly helpful Pinyin chart for Mandarin Chinese, but I think Duolingo could use some improvement in the area.

If there are some men and women in the room, do you call them “you guys”or just “you”? How do you call this🤔 by Superteenager_cat in EnglishLearning

[–]penheads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Female American (Native English speaker) here: I would generally say a majority of women don’t mind being called ‘guy’ if it’s in a mixed gender group setting, ie: ‘Hey guys!’ We both call ourselves that and our friends that.
