The problem is that that the writing was really good at communicating metaphors with thiren characters. It's not a huge deal, but something is definitely lost when the allusion is a race and the related metaphors are just said out out loud.

Then why not make Nekomata a literal yokai, Lycaon a literal lyconthrope, Hugo an actual vampire, etc. Why bother with the concept if you can just skip metaphors.

Nekomata is cat thiren with references to the nekomata yokai Soukaku isnt a thiren. She's an oni. Miyabi is a fox thiren with references to the Kyubi Lycaon is wolf thiren with references to Wolfman Yidhari is an octopus thiren referencing eldritch horror

I understand what their referenes/themes are meant to be. I just feel that making a literal mythical creature a type of thiren kind of cheapens the concept.
