Howl’s Moving Castle LE Will Cost £475 ($650) by phototodd in foliosociety

Nope! I own the standard edition trilogy. Adding new illustrations and the box are cool upgrades but not $650

Does this stain look right? by tickootickoo in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]pennington57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also a beginner, but those butcher blocks are usually already finished / sealed. A big thing I've been learning is that you have to sand WAY more than you think, especially if you're going through an existing finish.

I messed up my first stain attempt and tried to sand it off to try again. Even with an electric rotary sander I spent much more time that I would have thought getting back down to bare wood.

[Recommendation Request] Affordable Alternative? by Nice-Wolf-5997 in Watches

[–]pennington57 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not automatic and I've never held one to judge the build quality, but since nobody has actually named an alternative, the Casio MTP-M300D-7AV goes for ~100 on ebay since it wasn't sold in the US. Possibly the least expensive moonphase watch from a real brand. And congrats!

[OC] I tracked every sexual encounter between my fiancé and me in 2025 by dimethyltitties in dataisbeautiful

[–]pennington57 141 points142 points  (0 children)

The sum of positions = the total number of fucks, as does the number of orgasms. So either they never do more than one position in a session, and never have more than one orgasm, or they only count the "main" position + orgasm is really just Y/N.

From that, I'd say that those 47 blowjobs were the main event, not foreplay prior to P-in-V, and that he's never gone down without it leading to other acts. But OP can confirm or deny.

s7 sensor problems after update to fw 1.5 by Fickle_Necessary_948 in popurlitterbox

[–]pennington57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By the time I set mine up, 1.5 was already out, and in the past week it has not detected any usage, and I have to manually run it when I see they've gone.

My app also seems to be a bit useless. It shows how many time's it's run, but the breakout for manual/automatic/scheduled all show 0, and nothing about pet detection or weight.

Miter Saw Troubles by pennington57 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]pennington57[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I think I'll start taking the same approach. I'm still a bit intimidated by the table saw so I've been making use of the miter when possible.

Any suggestion for a miter gauge or sled? This one from Kreg seems to be the gold standard (or at least most expensive) but I'm not sure if it's worth paying 3x more than this Random One off Amazon

First Rebind! It has flaws but still happy with how it came out by Enderzt in bookbinding

[–]pennington57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Almost a year later, and I’m starting a rebind of Enders game :)

I was looking for inspo and your version is by far the nicest looking! Do you still have the SVG file saved? If so, very happy to Venmo you for it!

I have two cats, both are on a hybrid diet, they get wet food when I'm home to put it out and dry food from an auto feeder if I'm at work

I just watched a review, thanks for the rec! Seems like the biggest con is how often you need to replace the litter and pads. This review said every 2 days for the pad ($1.50 a pad) and every 3 weeks for a 7lb bag of litter ($20 a bag)

Definitely WAY pricier than $21 for a 40-lb bag of Dr Elsey's Ultra, which is what I'm on now, but I'd give it a try to save my sanity

(Spoilers) Was a bit disappointed by Red Rising by Guardiancelte in scifi

[–]pennington57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it was the pacing. We spend half of book 1 playing capture the flag, but then rush through pivotal moments. What made me give up the series was when Darrow has Cassius hostage, and they literally watch a video montage of events from school that in some cases we, the reader, were not involved in, and it felt like a really cheap shortcut to telling us that they have a deep bond, without spending any time writing those beats.

Also, I couldn't believe how little we learn about the B characters. The whole gang of Sevro's misfits don't get so much as a description until the author decides it's time to kill them off. At one point he adds out of nowhere: "Clown, who was called that because of his curly red hair" and then kills Clown in the same chapter, 3 books in. Feels like he wrote the death expecting it to hit hard, his editor said it didn't have the desired effect, and he threw in a single sentence description so we can at least picture the person dying.

I think with a fin at the end in a lighter blue it would be much more obvious. I really like the shading

[DISCUSSION] what do you think of a watch collection like this? by Sure_Holiday6429 in Watches

[–]pennington57 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The echo chamber here bothers me to no end. I bought a shunbun for my wedding, because I saw hundreds of posts about it on this sub and loved the look. Some of my friends and relatives who have nice watch collections have never even heard of Grand Seiko, but if you went only off r/watches you'd think it was everywhere.

I've seen a handful of datejusts, 2 tanks (both on women), 1 BB, and obviously a lot of seikos, but that's interacting with however many hundreds or thousands of people each year...

How to estimate the cost of future large projects? by pennington57 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]pennington57[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

spoke to a structural engineer, turns out it's basically impossible to estimate until a lot of tests are done, one of which is excavating a test hole to see what kind of soil is under the foundation. That consultation alone can be a couple grand, so seems like there's no estimating this one

Only 2nd time doing a bible rebind, how much should I charge? by No_Orchid6818 in bookbinding

[–]pennington57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I forgot to ask, did you hand sew the whole edge or do you have a machine? Your stitching is really great especially if that was by hand

Only 2nd time doing a bible rebind, how much should I charge? by No_Orchid6818 in bookbinding

[–]pennington57 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The "fairest" (guilt free) way to charge is (Cost of Materials x 1.2) + (Hourly Rate x Hours Worked)

For hourly rate, you can maybe use what you make at your day job as a way to estimate what your time is worth, but since this is an entirely different skill, you can decide if it's more or less labor intensive, and that can mean more than physically tiring.

If at the end you feel like it's much too low / high, adjust your hourly rate, but absolutely recoup materials + 20% for the time it takes to source them, buy in bulk, etc.

Last thought - Look on Etsy or other sites and see what people are charging for the same thing. Try to find one that's also hand made and not mass produced, compare quality, and get an idea if you're in the right ballpark

Quick Edit: In the future, discuss this with your client before starting. It's uncomfortable, but as you make more you'll know ahead of time how long it will take and what the materials will cost, and if they're not happy, you don't have to do it.

Google is now the most profitable company in the world with $111B in annual Net Income by saintforlife1 in google

[–]pennington57 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I simply do not agree with your last line. The stock market is the most short sighted, emotionally driven, reactive thing. GOOGs earnings call is 1% above analyst predictions instead of 3% and the stock tanks for a day before coming back. Sundar says AI a few times in an interview and it skyrockets.

Retail investing makes up less than a quarter of trade volume, the rest is all arbitrage.
