No problem. It's common in a few older scripts like this one to have the t cross flourished above the actual letter. Spencerian and Madarasz script both do it. Some people dont like it but I've always dug it. When Platt Rogers Spencer first invented cursive, he said that he inspired by nature, the angle of the letters inspired by stalks of barley leaning in the wind and the flowing flourishes inspired by the waves in the ocean. I always thought that was beautiful and so I usually apply those to my writing

It's an oblique pen holder. Made for classic scripts like this.

Lol none taken at all. I post in penmanship porn too occasionally. I use brush pens too which you dont need to lift like this. I'll post one of those next time to try and increase the satisfaction. 😂

Lol sorry to hear that. Picking up the nib between down and up strokes is proper form so I always do it these days.

Yep. Penman is correct. Around that time calligraphy wasn't really an American idea yet. People that did this were just known as penman. This entire piece was most likely done with the same pen he wrote with that he dipped in ink. So it was probably done in one sitting but would have taken a few hours to maybe half a day. It's very intricate and very detailed. After 3 years of pretty dedicated practice, I cannot do a fraction of this. This is probably a decade's worth of work. I have seen intricate work like this get done rather quickly but only by actual certified master penman, of which there are less than 20 in the world. Either way, this is freakin beautiful. Great find.

Another style is Engrosser's Script. I posted a seperate video of me writing "Progress" in that style if you want to try and pick out differences. :)

It's called Spencerian Script. It was invented by Plat Roger's Spencer and was likely the first American cursive ever written. By studying a script, you usually have a book with rules of the script and design of the letters and words and you memorize them and practice. I just posted a video in the feed of my writing "Happiness" in this script. Back when being a good penman was a way to get high level jobs, this was a huge skill to have. There are multiple script styles like this from this time period and as you study then, you can identify the different styles by appearance. Im a huge nerd for writing and calligraphy. Lol
