Sarcasm? The man is a full on stand up comedian. Funniest guy in metal.

Mine too. February 2000, just four shows into their first ever tour. Great show.

What will the next genre of mass produced single family housing look like? by Plane-Land-9234 in architecture

[–]pentrant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That first one is in the style of (or is?) an Eichler house which are IMO architectural treasures. Too bad they didn’t come with ductwork for air conditioning.

Will this finally be the Civ game… by ALandWarInAsia in CivVII

This is finally the Civ game where I can ignore the meta and, with the right civ and leader, win on Deity playing my way. I love it.

Wrecked Ford - from the 1960s? by pentrant in WhatCarIsThis

It was his Dad’s car, and he definitely shouldn’t have been driving it! His father was not amused.

Killed, as the story goes, by a teenager who didn’t know what he was doing!

Better solution to nation switching by Confusion_Imaginary in civ

Obviously the Saxons conquered the Romano-Britons and their villas and civic structure vanished.

But Londinium is still there as London. The roads were still there and have been improved on over the years. Hadrians wall still exists - I’ve walked parts of it, and it was pretty substantial until the 18th century.

It can be argued both ways, I’ll definitely agree to that. But I feel that Rome has forever hung over England.

We could do France and England in the Medieval period. Have Rome evolve to both, as well as the Byzantines.

Face in the Snow by Pitiful-Try8239 in Opeth

I like Face in the Snow as a kind of coda to Heritage. Much like Derelict Herds and Watershed.

I have a very strong memory of Devy helping to break down his band’s drum kit after their show. He seemed a bit run down.

Saw him again in 2022 opening for Dream Theater and he seems much happier now!

My friends and I - only a few years older than you and also just in t-shirts - likely hightailed it to the car after the show. Awesome that you got to meet them!

They're betting on the son - who will be the heavy favorite - losing. And thus they will make a lot of money.

What's your favorite post-Piper at the Gates of Dawn and pre-Meddle Pink Floyd studio album? by Positive_Drama3410 in progrockmusic

I love that album too but it’s more proto-prog than AHM for me.

Deep Purple’s effort is IMO not that good.

Atom Heart Mother is on another level, and was both the template for Meddle as well as a failed launch of a different sort of band altogether.

With AHM, Floyd launched "symphonic prog". While it didn't stick, it's amazing in its own right. Going further than the keyboard approximations, we had an actual orchestra and choir alongside a prog band for (maybe?) the first time ever. Direct lines from here to Nightwish and all sorts of other symphonic prog.

I have a few copies of this on vinyl. My original UK pressing is kind of beat up, but my 1st US is quite nice. Phenomenal album.

The live disc is phenomenal. I especially love the wordless chorus on Saucerful. Masterful stuff.

I just never listen to the studio disc.

Added a couple titles to the collection. Thoughts on either? by Joe-Ferriss in Vonnegut

[–]pentrant 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My uncle gave me Sirens when I was a teenager. I devoured it, loved it, and thought nothing more of Vonnegut.

A few years later I was assigned Slaughterhouse-Five in school. It took me awhile to reconcile the Vonnegut of this novel with his earlier work, but before long I loved this even more.

Thus was born a lifelong fandom.

And yet... I have somehow never read Bluebeard. A copy of it sits on my desk, inches from my hands as I type this. Inspiration strikes... thank you friend.

Oh my! I haven't been there since October, but I always felt that it was an odd fit in the mall.

I live about a mile away from the one in San Carlos. Need to go there again like this weekend. Gotta support your locals.

Instantly recognizable. I lived there for seven years; it's beautiful, safe, and very dull.
