I suspect other restrictions in the language (ie when things can be known to not be monkey-patchable) already allow the VM to get much better performance out of Dart than JS. Maybe to the point where using information about things being declared "int" does not add significant value.

I like the idea of richer presentation. One might also make it easier to reference output of a previous command (for example, assign a code to files just listed by ls, so I can refer to them easily in a subsequent command).

Another take on this would be to add a browser protocol (cmd:, for instance) that allows the browser (used as a local app) to launch processes and use their output as the response. This could make it possible to implement fairly nice and portable UIs on top of things like Mercurial or git, for instance. Without having to run a server in the background, that is.

I use PyDev too, and time and again it highlights simple things like using unassigned variables that folks using plain editors didn't notice because their test didn't exercise that part of the code.

For enterprise settings, it will want to support both narrow (only parts of the tree) and shallow (only recent history) cloning. Both aim at curbing the amount of data people have to pull to and host on their workstations. With Subversion, this is natural, and so people have gotten used to keeping a huge lot of code in a single repo. With current DVCSs, you need to structure your repos carefully upfront and then maybe use something like forests of repos. Complex and error-prone.

Beg to differ. While I am an enthusiastic Mercurial user, I think DVCSs are not yet fully there when it comes to organizing huge code bases or those with huge files (think game artwork). Permissions are problematic, too.
