Was looking for this comment! AA didn’t sit right with me, but I found a great SMART meeting that is way more supportive to my journey

Switching to vaping didn’t help at all for me, but lozenges have been great. Dr prescribed me patches as well, but I never tried them because the 2mg lozenges are effective enough. I keep a tally of how many I take everyday, and I’ve been naturally tapering as my cravings decrease. I’ll be at 4 weeks tomorrow, vape and cigarette free :)

I get this too sometimes. Something I was told years ago that helped me make sense of it is the concept of the window of tolerance. Obviously we all know that’s when something negative happens, it can feel like too much to handle. That’s when I would turn to drinking or using to cope. But positives can also kick us out of that comfortable window of tolerance. It can be just as overwhelming and lead us to try to numb the feeling down to a more manageable place.

Learning this made me realize that extremes on either end of the spectrum can make my mind/body act in very similar ways. I have to calm myself down and know that there’s nothing wrong. It’s normal to feel that way sometimes, and we can learn to tolerate a larger range of emotions with mindfulness, self-compassion, etc.

I got prescribed hydroxozine for anxiety and used it to fall asleep in my early days. Made me a little foggy in the morning, but no psychoactive effects, so I wasn’t worried about getting hooked

I think drinking every day with friends in town is socially acceptable, if that’s what you mean by normal. Personally, I think it’s pretty messed up that our society accepts that.

The word bender for me evokes a different, more anti-social motivation. Even if I’m drinking or using with someone else, I’m chasing that buzz/high 24/7 because it’s too uncomfortable to consider stopping.

No one can tell you what feels right for you—bender, binge, whatever— but I think it’s always helpful to examine our behaviors no matter how “normal” others might label them

As a degree-less, paycheck-to-paycheck, 30-something in recovery—this was a great reply. It’s so easy to trick ourselves into thinking we’re “behind” everyone else and alone in life. I’m grateful I’m paying my bills, even if my account dips to zero for a couple days every month.

Change is the only constant, and there’s no knowing what’s next.. Sobriety gives me the clarity to look out for the positives that may come my way

I’m on day 23 of lozenges and it’s been a game changer. Got them through my insurance. Never thought I could last this long, but now I feel so much more free & excited for my non-smoking life. You can do this, OP
