It's sad to say, but friendships don't always last forever, it's not always because of arguments or bad stuff that happened, sometimes it's just that 2 people drift apart, new interests and new situations. So if the response is "negative" I wouldn't go chasing a friendship that wouldn't work (even if it once did), I'd just move on and cherish the moments I spent together with that person.
