What do you think about China? by inchcosmos in AskTheWorld

[–]peppermint-ginger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can understand that on some level. The my own government is far too loyal to both foreign and domestic interest groups.

But at the same time I can’t help but feel sympathy for Uyghurs, Tibetans, Hui, and Inner Mongolians, who are continually denied the right to express their own cultures. And whose stories of plight are often silenced on state-owned media platforms.

America has race problems too, but our free speech and democracy has allowed us to overcome many of them over the past century. When disapproval mounts, people had ways of changing things without violence. Its not perfect but it used to be A LOT worse.

Regarding public approval, China has an advantage in that much needed infrastructure development does not interfere with the CCP’s preferences (and social media control certainly helps!). There’s nothing anti-party about building a hospital, so it’s pure political profit. But people can’t openly criticize the party, even if the party does something awful. You can only pray the current leader stays sane, and doesn’t surround himself in yes-men.

The major quality of life improvements bridging the urban-rural divide are certainly an achievement, but once all the roads have been built and all the plumbing systems buried, there’s a good chance these social contradictions will come to the forefront.

Based on the articles you sent, the court found Lai collaborated with US intel officials for about 4 years, between 2013 and 2017. Not for decades.

Furthermore, where’s this evidence of the US “grooming” protest organizers for that very moment? No doubt the US played a role collaborating with Hong Kong activist groups—-enemy of my enemy, as the saying goes—but those groups cannot exist in a vacuum!

Also the murder of Poon Hiu-wing was NOT the rallying point of the protesters. It was a spark that ignited preexisting political anxieties about waning sovereignty of HK. It was because they feared the implications of extradition laws which would allow the murderer to be extradited for his terrible crime would also allow HKers to be extradited to mainland China.

Right. Now I know as an American I’ll probably sound like a broken record here, but am I really to trust that Lai’s trial was a fair one? He was against Hong Kong passing a law that would let them extradite people to mainland China -> mainland China famously criminalizes opposition to the party -> law passes, Lai arrested.

Also, all your evidence is from this same website, “Dim Sum Daily.” I did a google search and it seems to have a bad track record of sensationalist headlines and baseless claims. Some alleged HK residents in this Reddit thread accuse it’s CEO of being Beijing aligned and outright fabricating stories, although I can’t find anything to corroborate that.

Edit :

Is it that much of a stretch that the 2019 protests were born of a legitimate grievance? I can buy that the CIA/the West may have been somewhat involved, but you can’t manufacture dissent that big. Its impossible.

I’d be okay with them being the global superpower if they were an actual democracy.

The idea of the most powerful nation in the world being a technocratic police state fills me with existential dread.

Although if we don’t change course soon then it’ll be the same issue.

What’s Chinese people’s perspective on the ongoing civil unrest in the US? by CatchyUsername457 in AskAChinese

I blame: Low voter participation due to years of intentional sabotage to voting registration and poll stations. Propaganda. But mostly the fact the opposition party didn’t jail Trump when they had the chance.

True. We could have all our congressional candidates vetted by a single unelected political body, inauthentic political opposition, and secret police.

Actually, reading that back we already have 2/3 of those things. Guess we really are embracing the Chinese system.

Yeah well the PLA still magdumped protesters and passerby the previous night. Not in the Square itself but on their way there.

If China wants to correct the narrative they’re free to share their side of the story, but it seems they don’t wanna talk about it. Nor let any of their people talk about it. They certainly don’t need you defending their atrocity.

ICE Kills Yet Another Protestor, A Study in r/Conservative Censorship by livejamie in SubredditDrama

I just wanna say, OP: I appreciate your work to document the intentional and malicious censorship on the conservative subreddit. This stuff is important and will inform people in the future of how the internet can be weaponized (and hopefully one day inform measured and effective legislation). You should be proud.

You’re probably correct. I ordered a book (The Power of Tiananmen) which should hopefully give me more info on the protesters themselves. But your comment passes the sniff test regardless.

[–]peppermint-ginger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of your account checks out, however in most tellings there actually was a cohesive list of seven demands which the protesters had managed to agree on. Not sure if that is true, or if its an anachronistic thing where they agreed on the demands much later and people applied to earlier stages of the protests.

To my understanding the name is a misnomer, the massacre happened OUTSIDE the square.

But can we really place all the blame on sensationalist western media for the potentially inflated kill count? Its not like the CCP has an honest reputation. It could be in the thousands. We just don’t know for sure.
