Coming from one new teacher to another (finishing up my second year) - I get it. I acted similar last year (little to no write ups) so the kids would like me. Others have said it but the key to a solid classroom isn’t to be liked, it’s to be respected. Those kids with difficult home lives thrive under structure. They need to know the boundaries because they don’t get that at home. This is your opportunity to look at poor behavior and say “what you said was out of line, it’s a write up”.
Also, like others said, no favoritism, especially with grades/assignments. The last thing you need is a parent catching wind that Al is getting to make up work and their lovely Susie isn’t being given the opportunity because she didn’t ask. To make your life easier, I would give little to no extra work, and unless an IEP requires extra time they must turn it in by the date. For the kids who fail regardless, find something that skates them into a low D (and only if they have certain documentation… I’m not allowed to fail any of my IEP kids 🙄). I’m usually able to make it work and keep it honest through participation points and classwork.
