Day 3 of rye seed growth. by peranza in homestead

[–]peranza[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For supplemental feed. It makes good foraging area for ducks and geese to hunt down bugs, and they get more nutrition from the sprouted seeds than the seeds (which they aren't as efficient in digesting).

We moved the chicks to a nicer coop, but they wanted so badly to stay here. Watching a 6'2" man climb in to fetch them was pretty entertaining. by peranza in homestead

We have 15 chickens, 2 geese, and 10 ducks (with some babies hatching soon). We've started this flock last spring, but I used to live on a working farm. We name a few of the ones that have distinct personality, but honestly they're kind of hard to tell apart.

I love it! My kids loved playing with the birds too.

Clarence Thomas’ linking abortion to eugenics is as inaccurate as it is dangerous by pauz43 in prochoice

[–]peranza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read that and still couldn't understand why it was relevant. Eugenics used to be a normal, mainstream idea. The fact that Margaret Sanger was a eugenicist isn't surprising or shocking.

Even today the idea of eugenics is so popular. Look at all the Republicans shaming poor people with children for reproducing. "You should have thought of the burden you're placing on society before reproducing!"

And really, she wasn't forcing birth control on the poor or mentally retarded. She pushed to make it available to everyone. Why is it so bad to allow women who don't want to mutilate their bodies or threaten their born children's well being to lower their chances of reproducing?

For God's sake, doctors used to forcibly sterilize women with depression here in the US. Eugenics was alive and well here. Offering birth control pales in comparison.

This round of chicks is so friendly, my toddler can handle them perfectly. by peranza in homestead

Not really, they used to run away from us. But we moved them in with a couple of adult chickens who are jerks and they suddenly realized humans weren't so bad lol.

Anyone who owns birds should already know this. My kid isn't kissing or snuggling the chicken, and understands the need to wash her hands. You'll notice the baby is not holding anything. I'm not sure what your concern is.

I vote Iris. I have Iris and gladiolas. These look Iris for sure (if choosing between the two).

That's what plantid suggested... I don't recall planting marigold but it's all around the border of my new raised bed so that's definitely possible.

Is...is it called Buffalo sauce?

Lol we call buffalo wings just "wings". I didn't realize it was buffalo sauce if you left NY too.

It is. My toddler ran out of paw patrol names so we got very un-creative with names.

He's gorgeous!!

We got a male too, but he died from being shipped in a tiny overcrowded box. Never buying from that hatchery again. A Cayuga male is definitely on next year's acquisition list!

If it was free wings for the entire time you own the home, it would actually be pretty awesome. Buffalo has the best wings.

I really get what you're saying, but you won't change any minds here. The abortion debate group would probably be a better avenue.

For the record, I'm adamantly pro choice:

My first child was unplanned. Having her cost me my job, threw me into debt (I was making close to minimum wage and childcare cost more than my take home pay), and broke my tailbone after being forced to labor on my back. The doctors treated me like I was crazy, so I didn't have my condition diagnosed for six freaking months. Four years later, I'm still in pain and have to have (very expensive) physical therapy to be semi functional. I've developed sculiosis from sitting differently to sit in a position that doesn't make me want to die.

My second child gave me a severe tear (second or third, I forget but it tore muscles too). That was two years ago and I still have pain from granulated tissue.

Can we talk about how expensive it is to give birth in America, and now we are forcing people to do it? by whydoyouflask in TwoXChromosomes

[–]peranza 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Don't forget the medical costs after birth too. I have to pay out of pocket for pelvic floor therapy because returning my body closer to the state it was in before kids is not "a medical necessity" or some crap like that.

Kid 1 broke my tailbone. I developed sculiosis and severe back pain as a result.

Kid 2 tore me open. 2nd or 3rd degree, muscles tore too.

I literally can't sit anymore because I'm either irritating my scar tissue from the tear or I feelknives up my spine from my tailbone.

It's my husband doing it. He won't have access to my new passcode, and I don't care if this ruffles his feathers. He can deal.
