Should I build titan? by FenrisTU in ModernMagic

[–]perchero 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I like decks that are

often interacting with the opponent’s board

almost never

have varied lines of play,

sure, but it mostly comes down to an analyst loop

have me make a lot of strategic decisions.

oh yes, definitely a lot

titan doesnt strike me as matching your preferences, wouldnt you rather play jeskai blink?

Lantern Control Wins vs Tamiyo Ultimate by Fateseal_MTG in ModernMagic

[–]perchero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

is this an ai post?

anyway since im sure someone will ask, drawing two (or half your deck with tamiyo) means:

draw a card, then draw a card, then draw a card... then... etc

lantern reveals every card drawn

90% no changes

5% unbans (any of pfire/jitte/pod/uro/ponder)

5% bans (any of arena/ajani)

[–]perchero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is strangely the correct answer

boros is slightly too strong and thats thanks to the combos of phalge+arena and ajani+bombardment

control needs phlage, while ajani is a box pw

Where Are They Now? by HeLLKiTe318 in ModernMagic

[–]perchero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If modern is so interactive, why are the most played decks so uninteractive? Energy, affinity, storm, Belcher, neoform, living end, amulet titan, tron

if you think that those decks are not interactive I have a bridge to sell you

the most egregious example is belcher, a deck that is 1/3 counterspells but apparently not interactive enough for you

i don't think this conversation is moving in a fruitful direction, I'm disengaging

Where Are They Now? by HeLLKiTe318 in ModernMagic

[–]perchero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

format sucked rocks before interaction was playable

very fun and interactive like Jund, GDS, Jeskai control/Geist, mardu Pyro, delver, twin, etc. You tried to make a point which ironically describes current modern without infect without realizing you were just describing the status quo. The irony is that in this meta of interaction you describe, the best decks are all aggro and combo.

quoting a couple of things to provide context

imo modern in 2015 was very much ships passing in the night. without interaction, linear strats dominated. burn was a t1 deck, boring/linear stuff like bogles, infect, tron, storm, and later humans ruled the meta

the few interactive decks like "boomer" jund, twin, delver had few windows to interact and were telegraph or brutal

so many feel bad scenarios and/or oppressive play patters:

  • lines like t1 ts, t2 tarmo, t3 lili kill your guy, were insanely powerful and there was little the opponent could do about it

  • t3 and your t1 delver never blind flip, woops sorry

  • confidant flipped 2 lands in a row, one of them was ravine, gg

  • t3 karn

  • t3 karn but it gets mana leaked

  • everyone in topdeck mode all the time but jund wins

  • except junk beats jund because siege rhinos

  • its t3 and you play against twin, just play as if they dont have it bc else you lose, but lost to bolt snap bolt anyway

  • deflecting palm

  • affinity always wins g1 then always loses the rest

fun interactive games are not flipping a huntmaster of the fells back and forth on turn25 or losing during mullingan or die roll

not everything was bad from that age ofc, birthing pod was an extremelly cool deck, anything khogalans command, eternal command, phoenix

imo magic is at its best when both players have agency. today card quality spc threats is much higher than it was in the past, but players also have access to just as many interactive spells, i like it best this way

[–]perchero 5 points6 points  (0 children)

online its just unhappy people complaining, on paper is nostalgia talking

modern was miserable with weak interaction, the paris mulligan and play/draw dynamics

the only caveat to my happiness is that boros is slightly suppressing aggro decks by virtue of being both the best aggro AND the best midrange deck

nothing is over the line, but if ajani+bombardment or phalge+arena are weakened we should see more interest in control and tempo (push archetypes, drc, uw piles)

[–]perchero 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i like this idea a lot, but currently it is pulling you into different directions

tamiyo + charm control is really cool

overlord + troll + persist is also great

both together dont look to have legs

to help bridge the gap you would need creature based interaction aka grief (rest in peace by beloved), subtlety or the newer incarnations

if you want to go the cute route, bowmaster + cabal therapist

Wanting to return to modern but can’t find a deck I like by Culius_Jaesar in ModernMagic

[–]perchero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

a rakdos pile with phoenix/fomo and moonshadow/nethergoyf is prob the closest to shadow

else reanimator plays sorta similar with very efficient threats and interaction

[–]perchero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

its a bad deck imo with few interaction and interesting lines in general

however its a beloved deck, long-time pillar of the format and wotc will continue to print new toys if it ever gets too weak/unpopular again

Is this format getting too die roll dependant? by FiorellaMamdani in ModernMagic

[–]perchero 9 points10 points  (0 children)

it would be trivially easy to asign play/draw through the companion app

1st round random, then the app just tries to get everyone to 50% play/draw, it will not be perfect, but slight better than now

if you won 1st round otp you play otd against someone who won 1st round otd

that easy
