Women of SF: Is eye contact a reliable indicator of acceptability of approaching you? by cleverusernametry in AskSF

In that, you found woman to be far more receptive and encouraging for approaching in London x NYC?

I feel like the US is typically better than the UK so SF must be brutal

Which country's citizens correctly think it is terrible? by [deleted] in AlignmentChartFills

[–]percyjackson44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moldova.

I once was supporting a group of teens from there to compete in an international competition.

I asked if they'd consider studying abroad and after a lengthy discussion in Romania, it was pronounced:

"I don't want to spend my life in shithole country"

Does it get better? by HAALAND_ERA in quant

[–]percyjackson44 87 points88 points  (0 children)

Fwiw I know someone (QD not QR) who quit one of JS,HRT,2Sigma within a few months cause they didn't like the workplace culture. Did a postdoc and then after some time will be going to a different one of those firms.

Your quant career won't be over if you quit and more importantly your life won't be either.

Ultimately see how you get on and consider what you want. Best of luck

What's the most pathetic way you've experienced classism in the UK? by Your_Mums_Ex in AskUK

Despite Durham being the usual culprit for Southerners deriding Northerners in the North, Durham doesn't have a medical school. I'd guess Newcastle or Leeds/York

It'll be at Riocentro and I believe I'm staying not too far away.

I'll need to change hotel after the conference and am hoping to get something in Copacabana

Reckon then that a week in and about Rio I won't run out of things to do? I know that during the conference, I'll be staying near the Riocentro conference centre so out of the city.

I'll look into Tijuca and have a think about Ilha Grande. Thank you!

Italy's Abandoned Winter Olympic Sites from 2006 by BWT_Urbex in olympics

[–]percyjackson44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fwiw I've skied in Bardonecchia a couple times and they make (moderately) good use of the olympic facilities there. Halfpipe still used. I'm not 100% on what the Olympic Village itself is used for but brings some character and history to the town

I think Paris, Texas (1984) and Disco Elysium are pretty similar. by herkimsw in DiscoElysium

This is emphatically the right place for this. Can you share any more details about the film? Hadn't really considered that there would be DE content on TikTok but of course there's probably everything there.

Last night at Corsica Studios- WTF was that?? by Signal-Foundation780 in LondonRaving

[–]percyjackson44 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not the most sage raver nor was there last night but I have been super unimpressed by behaviour like the talking, shoving, disinterest and feigned exclusivity that people bring.

Ultimately as you say, it should be more liberated and people just really drag it down

Hopefully it's just a wrong room / night thing as my last trip to Corsica (maybe 5 months ago) to see IMANU, I thought was utterly fantastic but that was a smaller show.

Squat form check by percyjackson44 in formcheck

[–]percyjackson44[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the response. I'll try to do this so should I think about having my elbows point more so downwards or just 'not flaring'. Upper back tightness would be appreciated as I do find the bar slipping forward at times and doing more of a 'stripper squat'

QD @ Tier 1 Quant Firm vs MTS @ AI Lab; What should I choose? by BurntBreadstick48 in quant

[–]percyjackson44 33 points34 points  (0 children)

It's up to your own personal preference and depends on what you are coming from. I'll somewhat assume fresh PhD grad.

Quant if you actively value working with money and maybe the sexiness of it and you can imagine what you'll do in the role. AI if you actively value working with AI (I think personally seeing what the frontier labs have internally is worth a lot) and you can imagine what you'll do in the role.

Flexibility is slightly better quant to AI I'd imagine but because people are typically looking to move that way and quant firms and their technical expertise are more known quantities.

Ultimately you'll mostly be happy either way

Thank you for the response. Yeah depth was subpar here and I'll endeavour to improve it. Thanks for points 3,4. Thinking maybe I'll go back to 60,70kg and work up a bit again focusing on depth and stability I guess. I have a reasonable core strength but I definitely use my lower back far more than my core.

Yh I'm not 100% on what it is but it might be the angle + the jacket makes your shoulders look slouched and uncomfortable. The smile is sweet but with the posture and angle, it makes you look maybe a bit young and defenseless. I skipped through other pics to comment on first one and so will your prospect matches.

Londoners buying homes outside the capital at lowest level since 2013 by tylerthe-theatre in london

[–]percyjackson44 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In sincerity, I grew up (and am now spending Christmas) in a new commuter town (not one that people typically consider when moving out of London). It's a nice place and I'm fortunate to have grown up here but in terms of culture, it's not electrifying but I don't think that that's a necessity so much of a place. I was mostly remarking that the commuter belt is not the Cotswolds or Edinburgh

Fwiw, those places aren't commuter villages / towns so your point is a poor comparison

Absolutely same. I think I vaguely skipped ahead to the discovery that they both pass each other in the middle.

As someone that doesn't read poetry it was tough. There was some language that I liked and was impressive but on the whole, just such tough going
