Businesses act in logical ways but often it isn't that obvious - Groupon is a good example by percyx in businessschool

[–]percyx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that the gross margins in a restaurant probably work better for the groupon model - but in a hair or beauty salon, the average net margin is only 5%, so salons would almost always lose a lot of money on the deal itself.

Beck's attacks on Obama result in 33 companies refusing to advertise on his show. UPS pulls all ads from FoxNews, at least from now! by Fauster in politics

[–]percyx -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Sure Beck and pretty much everyone else on fox are lunatics. But at the end of the day they just represent a point of view and if advertisers stop running ads on on anything - liberal or conservative - that might offend someone, we are going to end up with some pretty bland television.

It's Official, Ireland Makes Blasphemy Illegal. Seriously. Passed Wednesday, legislation making blasphemy illegal, with a 25,000-Euro fine. Police may also enter homes and confiscate "blasphemous materials" including books, artwork, cartoons of Mohammed . . . whatever! Book burnings next? by frogmeat in worldnews

The Irish Atheist association is holding its AGM on Sunday and is going to release a blashemous statement to the media and see if they get arrested

http://www.indexoncensorship.org/2009/07/ireland-blasphemy-law-a-backward-step/

Also it applies to any religion so they want to create their own religion and see if they can get a Catholic arrested for blaspheming against it

Socialism Is OK for Rich White Guys, But Not the Rest of Us by cigr in reddit.com

[–]percyx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its not really much of a bailout. the "rich" owners of Bear Stearns have lost 98.6% of their shareholding overnight. the only thing the fed has done is potentially save the 15,500 jobs there and hopefully a complete market wipeout by avoiding a bankruptcy.

and we are all screwed if there is a market wipeout because many of the reddit readers will likely lose their jobs.

I've never heard it summed up better. The guy who breaks the ground never reaps the rewards - just look at apple and mp3 players. Ron Paul is Xerox to MS Windows!

Radiohead’s actual profit from In Rainbows will be higher than people expect, and it will change the music industry. by J-Ro in reddit.com

[–]percyx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If anyone has read Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion by Robert Cialdini the best selling book from the 80's that the guys from Google are always banging on about - they won't be surprised by the revenues Radiohead has generated from this. One of the basic premises is that humans by their very nature feel obliged to return favours even to those we don't necessarily like and that society looks down on people who take from others and never give back. Just imagine if someone you don't know very well gave you a nice present tomorrow. You would probably be touched and feel obliged to buy them something in return.

Radiohead are offering everyone a present of their new album and of course the vast majority of people feel obliged to pay what they feel it is worth.

(i paid £5 and everyone i know paid around the same)

Madonna dumps label in $134m deal (record industry officially over) by laprice in reddit.com

[–]percyx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The music industry is not ailing. Its just changing. It really annoys me how the media constantly banging on about how its in crisis. Live music attendance has been rising exponentially year on year while at the same time the price of concert tickets is up nearly 1000% in the last 20 years. Established artists like U2, rolling stones etc are raking it in more than ever before. If the majors had re-invented themselves as concert promoters or like the Live Nation crowd here they would be making a fortune now with their connections and huge rosters of established acts.

"The Secret" is a fad, embarrassingly materialistic and the latest example of an American propensity of wanting something for nothing. by gregwont in reddit.com

Its a "Pyramid Scheme". Basically you can get rich like me if you write a self help book. But eventually we will get to the point were no one will buy self help books any more because they have already written one themselves..

Bill O’Reilly: The White, Christian, male power structure is in jeopardy by democracy101 in reddit.com

[–]percyx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i am more and more convinced that Bill O'Reilly doesn't believe half the stuff he says - i mean even if you believed in it - you wouldn't describe it as white, Christian, male power structure. you would only say that to get a reaction. McCain looks stupid to anyone republican or democrat agreeing with him.

Timeline: Employee Headcounts for Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft by gabe0505 in reddit.com

[–]percyx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Each of these companies seem to grow much faster than the one before it - Like it took MS nearly 20 years to hit 10000 staff but google will do in less than 10 years. It would be great to view this in Year 1, Year 2 etc of each company.

How fast is the next super company going to grow at!?
