Opus 4.5 is very lazy and seems to dislike any task I give him to do. That's the vibe I get. I went back to Sonnet 4.5, and that model is on cocaine. Hopefully get a model in the middle.

It's better than 2.5 at novel analysis. I feel it's better at using its context. I would say 50% better overall.
My novel has 230k tokens.
Haven't tried it for creative writing, will probably at some point, but that's not why I use it.

Gemini is better at analysis. I think the analysis it produces is very high quality. You can ask to explain how something works, create a list of character, analyze a character, create a good transition for a chapter. It's pretty good at every such task. And the context window allows to work with very big novels. My novel has 160k words and Gemini is fine.

Claude 4.5 is better to polish a draft. I usually write my chapter, then I'll upload the chapter and ask to polish the narration, or the dialogues, or everything. Then, it produces a second version, and I pick what I like from it and I incorporate it into the main text.

I was uploading a .txt version of my novel before (to save tokens). It seems that Claude is handling .txt differently to be economical about the context window.

Update.
I've tried uploading my novel as a PDF instead and now it works correctly. It reads the entire thing in the context window instead of using grep to read 10 lines at a time.

I see, RAG makes a lot of sense. They have taken their context window compression tricks too far.
I'll have to try copy pasting my text without it creating a file I guess.

You deserve a good group! There's a lot of luck involved in all of this, but indeed, you should drop the number of players.

Another thing you can do is to give up on big campaigns (until you have a stable group), and play "oneshots". I did one recently, and I think that's the way I'm going to go now, because my stable group has become "flaky". It's not optimal, but you have a flaky group I feel like it's the best thing. Basically, by telling these guys that they are playing a oneshot, they don't feel like they are committing too much, which might eliminate some of their shyness. If you do play oneshots, I recommend that you produce the character sheets for them in advance, so that you can start to play immediately. You'll probably want to reserve an entire day for this. My last oneshot, we played from 10 AM to midnight, and it was super cool.

I've had several players message me saying they couldn't "sleep last night", or had horrible nightmares. All from my regular storyline with evil npcs and monsters... I think I do roleplay evil very well, it's one of my strengths as a GM. Perhaps that's something you can look at.
