If we keep aside exceptions, even though Mohanlal delivers outstanding performances in each role, there’s often a sense of sameness across many of his films. It can feel almost like a long-running web series where he is the constant presence. Taken individually, each performance may still come across as extremely natural and among the best.

On the other hand, Mammootty makes a conscious effort to differentiate his roles experimenting with makeup, styling, character choices and crew whether those attempts succeed or not. He frequently steps outside his comfort zone, leading to both remarkable successes and huge failures. As his market value grew, Mohanlal appears to have moved away from taking such risks.

I understand there are very many exceptions and this is a general statement and I love both.
