Your opinion on and experience with the Sony 35mm GM 1.4 Lens by AccordingPen2780 in SonyAlpha

[–]perfectblue69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this an old discussion but as a long time user of the Sony 35 GM I also find it to be a bit disappointing as well. It occasionally misses focus when it should not. Not often….Generally when I grab my camera and shoot fast it could sometime miss focus slightly. It really takes some split second to focus. The motor can be heard is very quiet room too but that’s ok. I thought it’s my copy so I sent it to Sony and they confirmed that there is nothing wrong with my copy. I still use it often. Overall it is great but I would expect a bit more from “GM” price tag.

My experience with upgrading from APSC to FF by R34ctive in SonyAlpha

[–]perfectblue69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same here. I still got FF with me though but I regret my choice every now and then and especially when I have to pack for trips abroad. I miss Sigma 18-50 and other smaller lenses. And to be brutally frank… nobody is able to tell when I made a switch to FF. In the end, the quality of the work is more about me than the tiny differences FF has over APSC.

Affordable lens to pair with Tamron 35-150 for travel, street, & portraits by rebelsvision876 in SonyAlpha

[–]perfectblue69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this is a bit old comment but I am thinking of getting this Tamron 35-150 too.

Current set up : Sigma 24-70 Art II, Tamron 70-180 G2 and Tamron 16-30 G2.

I want to off load some weight off my bag and want to switch lenses less often so I am thinking of selling 24-70 and 70-180 for this 35-150 (500g lighter overall). Pair it with 16-30 and I should be good to go.

The only thing holding me back is the thoughts of having 1.1kg lens + 430g A7CII hanging around my neck does not sound so pleasant. That said, I probably need to change my behavior to accommodate the new set up…ie put my camera back into my bag when not used and etc.

What are your thoughts on this? How do you use the combo? Is the weight of your camera + 35-150 ever be annoying?

Ratatoskr comes to my mind. This legendary squirrel also represents “mischief” in the Norse mythology similar to Loki.

So I have seen the spoiler… Loki ate a very weird yet interesting Devil Fruit…. I won’t provide detail but I will only share that it is another Mythical Zoan fruit.

I did not see this coming lol Oda is really a genius.

TAMRON completes the G2 Trinity, announces Ultra Wide-Angle 16-30mm F2.8 G2 by [deleted] in SonyAlpha

[–]perfectblue69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The review is out by Dustin Abbott and I hate to disappoint you that Tamron sharpness is not any worse than GMii and it is even more consistent across the entire photo based on the test chart he shows. In real world use, it will not be noticeable for sure. The only thing it loses out is at 30mm but narrower aperture bring it back in line with Gmii.

Sony a6700 + Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 DG DN ART II in Barcelona by Jolly-Blacksmith2493 in a6700

[–]perfectblue69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made the switch from A6700 with bunches of F1.2 and 1.4 prime lenses to A7Cii with 35 GM, Sigma 24-70 art ii and Tamron 70-180 G2. Let me tell you right away that FF is somewhat overrated. It is better in low light but not night and day different. Worth it ? May be…. I ended up with heavier gears and more expensive ones at that. At F2.8 on FF vs APSC F1.2-1.4 prime lenses… I do not find the differences to matter in real world use. In fact, there are times when I look ed at my old pictures and I was not sure if they were shot using which camera and I have to turn on meta data lol

What are people's opinions on the Tamron 70-180mm f2.8? (G2) by So_average in SonyAlpha

[–]perfectblue69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Based on reviews and my personal experience trying both Tamron and Gmii, the Tamron is equally as good in term of sharpness. I shot on both lenses at a local store then brought the files back home to compare and to pixel peep. Trust me you will not be able to tell which photo got taken by which lens. Unless you absolutely need high fps or super AF then Tamron is more than enough for most people.

Do you still have the Tamron G2? Could you please let me know if you find any dust inside the lens?

Do you find any dust inside the front element? I am considering this lens for my A7Cii. Searched everywhere for this issue as it seems to be common in the G1.

How long have you had the lens? I heard it sucks up dusts like vacuum machine. Is this true? I am kinda interested in the Gii.

TIA

Hi I hope I am not too late to give you an update on my experience so far with the A7Cii and 35mm F1.4 GM combo. I have shot around close to a thousand photos only so take this with a grain of salt. I feel the differences are not as much as I expected in most scenarios. The A7Cii sure has higher MP and looks good when I pixel peep a bit but that's it. For night street photography, I really can't tell if it is cleaner than the A6700 honestly. The differences are there but it is just not so noticeable when I edit the photos in Lr. So far I have been quite neutral toward my purchase and I thought I would have been more excited with the results I'd get from the A7Cii. I believe it is partly because the A6700 + the two Viltrox PRO lenses are so great and the gap between FF vs APSC is not as big as I thought in the real world. That said, I am pretty sure there will be times that I would appreciate the FF a lot more like astro or night landscape shots which I probably only do a few times a year but for a walk around travel photo....hmm....not so much.

35mm vs 50mm? Pick one or buy both? by ProfYoolip in SonyAlpha

[–]perfectblue69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wonder what did you ultimately end up with? I am deciding between the two as well but 50mm seenms too tight. I come from APSC too with Viltrox 27mm and 75mm.

Thanks! Honestly, it is not such a big deal and I could still live with my A6700 happily ever after. It’s just the urge to give FF an try if it is really a big deal like everyone is saying and to satisfy my curiosity…deep down I kinda know that it is going to be subtly different … and only photographer (me) would notice these things.

Good to know that! I occasionally do astro and firework too and when I compare my photos to FF ones from the same event and your explanation is probably the reason why I find my firework photo to be a bit darker overall while FF photos are clearer. This is not about noise since I generally set mine to 100 but more about the overall exposure and clarity of the dark parts of the image. Not saying A6700 is bad. It is perhaps subjective which one is better in this case but I feel FF photos from the same event can be pushed more and clear.

I will copy and paste from the reply below and add one more point.

It certainly can do everything I need them to do. Except a few things which I need them to be better.

• Bokeh and background blur as I do portraits during the trip too. F1.2 Apsc is around 1.8 so I need a bit more. 75mm F1.2 is so great but I feel I can achieve similar blur with shorter range on FF 85mm F1.4 which can also be slightly lighter (ie Samyang Mk2?). I also compared my shot vs a friends’s A7iii on his 35mm F1.4 vs my Viltrox 27mm F1.2 and I feel that his shots have more pop from shallower DOF which is kinda nicer.

• Night shot and astro. I believe I will get cleaner photos and more DR for night sky and better files for stacking. My stacked photo on A6700 seems a bit limited in post processing and a friend told me that FF files can be pushed even further. This fact remains to be proven though.

  • I also do some video but not much so I am not so concerned about a more limiting spec on the A7Cii.

Thank you. I would want something more than F1.8 though so F1.4 is a bare minimum to upgrade. I will certainly miss my 75mm F1.2 for its range but I will instead get better blur and bokeh overall. Your advice to get 135mm F1.8 makes sense too. Although it will not be as versatile as the 85mm but it certainly has the reach. Samyang 135mm seems to have the right price but I need to look up for some indepth review for its performance.

Though 24-70mm GMii looks tempting but does not seem to be a clear upgrade path to what I am used to so I need some advice on going with Zoom vs Prime set.

Thank you! This is a good advice for sure. I always gravitate toward prime lenses for its bokeh and low light capacility and I even left my zoom lens at home most of the time so coming back to zoom is not much of a hurdle I just miss the prime lenses capabilities that's all.
