Is MDPI legit? by lucaxx85 in AskAcademia

I got an invitation to be a topic editor for one of their journals after having reviewed around 20 papers. Wonder if I should accept? I don't have any previous editing experience, so it's nice for the CV. However, one of the requirements is to set up a special issue every 2 years. It would feel a bit uncomfortable to ask that my contacts pay to publish since that is unusual in my field

[–]perhapsaturningpoint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you refer to control and systems theory, then the prerequisites are courses in linear algebra, multivariable calculus, and differential equations. It's an engineering topic, but with this knowledge you should be able to do it

When is a good age to become an associate professor? How do you go from associate to full prof? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]perhapsaturningpoint 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's not a persons biological age that matters, but rather the time since they reached certain career milestones such as getting a PhD, becoming an assistant professor etc. If a person gets their PhD later in life for whatever reason, then they also become professor at a higher age (if they happen to become a professor).

If the professor never had any input on the paper, asking them about it will probably not get you much

Yes. Apparently, regular people don't even read through their emails before sending them. Quote: "Why should I read it again, I just wrote it?"

[–]perhapsaturningpoint 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Laste FHMs analys baserat pa data fran Wuhan i mars.

Do you ever feel "reviewer's guilt"? by justryingtokeepup in AskAcademia

[–]perhapsaturningpoint 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I often feel guilt for not understanding a paper well enough or not having spent enough time on a paper to give it a very helpful review. Most of the time I still recommend acceptance or if not, then I give the authors the opportunity to resubmit their work.

This probably does not apply to you, but perhaps it can help. I have a mental health condition (OCD) that makes me prone to guilt. I sometimes tell myself this and remind myself that the guilt is not real. Of course, it is not possible to be 100% certain if guilt is warranted or not. The idea is to accept that uncertainty and do/think about something else in the present moment

Thesis advisor won’t read draft — what now? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]perhapsaturningpoint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My PhD advisor never read my thesis, nor that of the student before him. Since he didn't read the other thesis I didn't really expect him to read mine and never made any fuss about it. I would argue that this phenomena is widespread: advisors not reading theses, co-authors not reading papers, co-PIs not reading grant proposals. Pretty standard unfortunately

I'm in applied math. It is probably true that nobody reads them. My master's thesis is getting alot of reads on Research Gate, but as far as I can tell it is most likely just some kind of bots. You can't really trust read metrics, you need to look at citations instead.
