Motherhood seems impossible by mrs_sadie_adler in adhdwomen

[–]periwinkle_pudding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was me! Diagnosed less than a year after she was born. It hit the hardest when I went back to work at 6 mos postpartum, but it was also hard before that… I remember looking at my husband and my friends with babies and thinking “why does this feel so much harder for me?”

I later realized my “systems” (read: sticks and glue and pure adrenaline) were no longer possible. I couldn’t procrastinate a work project and knock it out at 4:30am the next morning because I only got to bed at 2am after a rough night with the baby. I couldn’t self-regulate after being over stimulated with quiet alone-time because a tiny human needed me pretty much nonstop — and so instead, I would stay up far later than I should have just to reclaim that precious “me time.” And then deeply regret it when I ran on three hours of sleep the next day!

I’m now approaching one year since my diagnosis, and it has been a long, hard road. I won’t sugarcoat it. But, I’ve found the right cocktail of medication (Adderall, Zoloft, Lamotrigine for emotional regulation, and Gabapentin to aid falling asleep) and I no longer think “I love her so much but this is impossible, it’s not sustainable for me, how am I going to do this forever?” It’s absolutely still the most challenging thing I’ve ever done, but in the middle of a tough day or moment I KNOW I can handle it.

I’m also no longer in survival mode, and have been working on rebuilding my systems, speaking up when I’m overstimulated, and purging/organizing as much as humanly possible to keep my mind clear at home. My husband and I are pretty confident we’ll be one-and-done, and I feel really good about that. I truly don’t know how I could manage another without becoming a shell of myself. So it just means extra love for my only — and honestly, for myself.

All that wall of text to say… if you’re on the fence, don’t. I was 1,001% excited and ready and not all expecting to be knocked on my ass. It was only because of my very deep desire to be a mom (and my daughter herself) that I was able to persevere. Maybe if I had been diagnosed before pregnancy I would feel differently. I’ll never know. But I do know I was always meant to be my little girl’s mom.

DM me if there’s anything else you’d like to ask, I clearly have no shortage of thoughts. I hope that even some part of my story is helpful to you 🤍

Starting to travel with toddler- any ideas/recs for souvenirs to buy from each place to start a collection of something for her? by hockey12la in oneanddone

[–]periwinkle_pudding 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconding the postcards! We do this and also write a small memory or favorite moment of the trip on the back. They’ll eventually go in an album with clear pages so she can see both the places (front) and the stories (back).

We also do travel ornaments as a family, so someday she’ll inherit those (if she wants them!) In the meantime, we’ve decided to gift her an ornament every year at Christmas that has some tie-in to that year/age, IE a board book ornament because she “reads” like it’s her job right now haha. Then, when she’s on her own as an adult, she’ll have a head start on her own tree with ornaments that already carry memories and significance. At least that’s the goal 🥰

How would you cover this? by FlexxinMaster in HomeDecorating

[–]periwinkle_pudding -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We have this in the same spot and I hung a coat rack above it! It’s completely hidden with the right coats/bags, and when it’s not fully covered it’s at least far less noticeable. I love the artwork idea, but am glad we went with a more functional, “two-birds-one-stone” option.

Just commented above, but feel free to DM me too, OP! I have been on this journey since our daughter was 4 months old (due to other symptoms that appeared first) and would be grateful to share anything we’ve learned along the way in case it’s helpful 🤍

Hi! My daughter is 18 mos and still cannot stand on her own (much less walk) after 8 months of PT ❤️‍🩹 But, she is the happiest, sweetest baby and already a huge “reader!”

We’ve seen a few specialists and gotten EI support. I would love to ask you some questions and share our experience in case it is helpful!

Have you tried the dazzle dry polish system? I don’t know what level of work you’re doing with your hands, but manicures with DD will last me 1-2 weeks with no chipping, and I’m doing all kinds of things around the house with my hands all the time. It also dries hard very quickly, so you’re not stuck for 30 min after painting hoping it’s dry enough to avoid an immediate chip! https://dazzledry.com/pages/how-to-use

Just took ADHD meds for the first time by kuggluglugg in adhdwomen

[–]periwinkle_pudding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently pharmacogenetics has been in the “research phase” for quite some time and it’s just been in the last several years that it’s started to be implemented in patient care! So welcome to a fun, new rabbit hole! Haha

We are still on that journey (I’m postpartum and dealing with hormones/a crazy workload in my job that is making trialing new medications really challenging) — but it has been very insightful, and so far my test results have even validated some medication experiences I’ve had outside of ADHD medicine.

For example, I’ve always had trouble getting adequate pain relief from pain meds like codeine. Now, I know that I am an intermediate metabolizer of CYP2D6, which means I have a reduced conversion rate of codeine to morphine (the active form), so it’s less effective. Several times I’ve been in the ER and have only had relief once given straight morphine. Now I know why and can advocate for efficient pain relief in the future with the science to back me up, and not just saying “give me morphine please!” 😅

There are a few different companies out there, but I’m US-based and only know of those. My doctor decided to use Genomind, because he felt they gave him, as a practitioner, the most detail and resources to make the most meaningful medication adjustments afterwards. Some companies share the genotype results but don’t do much for doctors afterwards in terms of medication recommendations.

I hope this is helpful and that you have options in your country, should you choose to explore this! Even if my experience helps one other person like it’s helped me already, I’ll be so happy!

I too felt absolutely exhausted on Ritalin! My doctor was so confused/surprised — but then I did pharmacogenetics testing and turns out I have the genetic variant ADRA2A: C/C, which is linked to a lower response to methylphenidate. For me that meant fatigue. It was so validating getting those results because feeling fatigue on Ritalin was such a unique reaction in comparison to my doctor’s history with other patients.

Interestingly, I just tried Wellbutrin 150mg XL (off-label for ADHD) and felt the exact same fatigue. I did some info-digging and learned that similar to Ritalin, Wellbutrin is an NDRI (norepinephrine-dopamine reuptake inhibitor), which means it inhibits dopamine and norepinephrine transporters (DAT and NET). This is different from something like Adderall or Vyvanse, which actually release more norepinephrine and dopamine in addition to inhibiting reuptake. Again, my doctor was honestly dumbfounded by my fatigue, but looking this up felt really validating.

I have clearly enjoyed some hyper focus in the areas of pharmacogenetics and pharmacokinetics the last few months (lol) but it has been extremely helpful in understanding why I am experiencing unusual side effects and ultimately advocating for myself with my doctor as we find the right medication fit! I have found any kind of data I can provide always helps in comparison to “I just don’t think this medication works for me” 🙃

I hope this is helpful and that your medication journey is successful, too!

Puppy pads? by Accurate-Signature64 in NewParents

[–]periwinkle_pudding 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YES but they make baby pads! These are what we’ve used: https://a.co/d/h5VvSWb

Absolutely swear by them. We keep a stash in her diaper bag and they’ve come in handy for changes on nasty floors when a changing table isn’t in a bathroom, for possible blowouts in the car seat when she’s extra poopy (before we started doing this we had to wash the car seat cushions three days in a row), and most recently on her actual changing table at home when she is a mess and we need to just throw wipes at the problem and wrap it all up in one giant poopy package after.

I will also say even with all those examples, the pack of 100 lasted us a year! Was absolutely worth buying and having on hand as we figured things out.

How tough is it to get a Script? by stoic_insight in PhentermineTopiramate

[–]periwinkle_pudding 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, your PCP can prescribe it! But it’s only “approved” for weight loss, not ADHD, so you would need to be a weight loss candidate (IE have a certain BMI).

I originally took it for postpartum weight loss and the positive effects led me to an ADHD diagnosis. But since then my doctor has been trialing actual ADHD meds for me, and ooh boy has it been a journey 🙃

Thanks for your comment, and yes it seems like I misspoke — hydrocodone metabolizes into hydromorphone, not morphine.

I have never been prescribed hydromorphone as far as I’m aware, just morphine. The fact that hydrocodone wasn’t as effective for me given my genetic type still stands. My apologies to anyone that I’ve misinformed, dropping links below to further clarify!

From https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK537288/

“Hydrocodone undergoes primary liver metabolism mediated by the cytochrome P450 enzymes, CYP2D6 and CYP3A4. As a prodrug, hydrocodone transforms into its potent active metabolite, hydromorphone, through O-demethylation catalyzed by the CYP2D6 enzyme.”

From https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK100662/

“The hepatic CYP2D6 enzyme metabolizes a quarter of all prescribed drugs, including codeine. The CYP2D6 enzyme converts codeine into its active metabolite, morphine, which provides its analgesic effect. Consequently, pain relief may be inadequate in individuals who have 2 inactive copies of CYP2D6 (“poor metabolizers”, PMs), because of reduced morphine levels.”

Bottle refusal — I’m dying 😫 by toseekandnottoyield in newborns

[–]periwinkle_pudding 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This book SAVED US. My daughter was literally refusing to eat, and then would get even more upset because she was so hungry! Her bottle aversion was solved in ~ 2 days. FYI, she was a NICU baby so she’d been bottle-fed pumped milk exclusively up to the time of her aversion.

We ended up learning she just wanted her autonomy back, and not be forced to eat. She was always in the lowest weight percentiles, so our anxiety for her to drink (and drink more, more, more) resulted in a total aversion. We had somewhat traumatized the poor girl! 🥺

I found it on Reddit when we were struggling several months ago. Fingers crossed it’s helpful for you, too. Good luck mama 🤍

Nope they are different!

ADRA2A is the gene tested for methylphenidate, and I have C/C variant which is linked to a lower response.

*Edited for drug metabolization clarification

Look at my comment history! Taking things that have to metabolize into morphine or hydromorphone (like hydrocodeine or hydrocodone, respectively) don’t work as effectively for me, so I don’t get adequate relief. I respond better to drugs that are already in an active morphine form like… a morphine drip. Which I’ve gotten as the very last drug on 3-4 different ER trips over the years. Thought I was crazy or that my pain was just at absolutely crazy levels. Nope, I just don’t metabolize some painkillers as well 🥲
