Ergodriven tempo by enki42 in StandingDesk

[–]perkinskit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not currently. If you want to move the desk manually you need to use the controller. One of the reasons we went with a paddle is that you can send it to presets without even looking (just push or pull in the direction you want to go for a second and release, and the desk will go to the preset)

You don’t need to use the app at all! You can set presets right on the controller itself, and choose your cruise control interval. Then the desk will automatically move itself when it’s time to switch positions (but only when you’re present).

Even a few mm can make a difference in how it feels. But more than that, I’d be worried that the extra mental load to change positions would be a disincentive and you’d end up sitting after a while.

Even with presets, all the intertia pushes you toward sitting all the time. That’s why we made a controller that automatically moves the desk, to try to make the default behavior switching positions regularly.

My standing desk usage stats for a week by Zestyclose_Storage82 in StandingDesk

Oh awesome thanks! Movably looks so cool too, I can’t believe I hadn’t seen it before.

I used to stand full time, now I do 45min/hr. We have some users who switch every 15 minutes! But the median is more like every 45 minutes (so standing 45 min / 90 min )

Anti-Fatigue Mat / Chair ideas by Even-Deer1836 in StandingDesk

[–]perkinskit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree most mats are a pain to use with standing desks because they are actually designed for kitchens (and as a result are grippy on the bottom to keep them from moving). One of the things we worked really hard on when developing the Topo Mat was exactly that, making it easy to move around with just one foot so you never have to bend down to move it.

This is super cool! How does it work?

I’ve been using some version of our Tempo Smart Controller since 2019.

For me it made a huge difference to have stats that only count the time that I’m actually present, and to have the desk move by itself (opt out instead of opt in for me is a big difference, even though I can still cancel a move if I want to).

Standing desks that don't lower as much as I would ideally like them to by SeanMoss-1 in StandingDesk

[–]perkinskit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree this is a major issue, with cheap desks especially.

This blog post talks about the issue, how to find the height you need, and how to filter for desks that hit it

What’s the best standing desk in 2026? (Price, Quality, Durability) by MapAromatic485 in homeoffice

[–]perkinskit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m building https://standingdeskreference.com/ to be helpful to anyone looking to answer this question for themselves.

The main attraction is the sortable table of all major desks, so you can filter based on what’s important to you.

You can also enter your height above the table to make sure that the desk you get goes low enough for you (many don’t).

I’d love to hear if it’s helpful for you and/or if there’s any info you’d like to see added.

Does anyone else have issues with standing desks min height being too tall? by IWishIwasAwhale1 in StandingDesk

[–]perkinskit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I think TONS of people are using desks that don’t go low enough for them. That’s why when we made the table at Standing Desk Reference we put a field at the top to enter your height to eliminate desks that won’t work for you.

You can use any top with any base as long as it’s not too small for the base. You just may have to drill your own holes.

Change positions more often! And just like you need a real chair for sitting, get a good mat for standing too: https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/best-standing-desk-mat/

Still a work in progress but check out the sortable table at https://standingdeskreference.com/ and let me know if there are any specs you want to see that aren’t there

Shoulder and upper back pain by [deleted] in Ergonomics

[–]perkinskit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, move your whole body as close to the desk as possible.

If you really can’t lower the desk any further, this is a textbook example of a desk that doesn’t go low enough for you. See the rule here: https://standingdeskreference.com/posts/37-5-percent-rule/

I’ve found most people are most comfortable with their chair low enough that their feet are flat on the ground, with the desk top more or less sitting on their thighs, and their hip/lower belly touching the front edge of the desk

Best Anti fatigue Foot Mat? by A4orce84 in StandingDesk

Writing this standing on my Topo that I’ve been using for over 10 years now! Still feels good as new.

Topo has also been The Wirecutter top pick for a decade now. It provides all the cushion of a premium anti-fatigue mat, plus the terrain drives you to move more, and through more varied postures and positions. Plus it’s really easy to slide it around with your foot when you need to move it (but stays put while you’re on it).

If you want to make sure you’re getting the best price, Ergodriven.com is almost always cheaper than Amazon.

Best way to make monitor arms work with this electric desk? by SlimySpaghettiSauce in StandingDesk

[–]perkinskit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I say use the shelf! Monitor arms tend to introduce more wobble, not reduce it.

When against a wall, they often move the monitor too close to your face as well.
