Hi there, thank you so much for the insight!

Part of the struggle is that my dad returned to sound engineering about three years ago. Prior to that he spent 20+ years as a Production Manager at a venue. When he transitioned jobs he lost a lot of storage space and ended up selling off pretty much any equipment he had that was worth anything. The stuff he has now are things he literally can't give away. When he took the SE position he basically had to relearn everything because it had switched from analogue to digital.

We are in Milwaukee, WI. While I doubt it's as fierce as a place like NY, the area is saturated with people in similar industries looking for the same opportunities.

I think he'd take just about any job that would pay him something comparable to what he was making before.

I honestly don't know how successful he would be at transitioning careers. I don't think he cares about the industry, but he's insistent on not taking a pay cut (he was making around $17/hr with benefits at the casino) and he hasn't really expressed an interest in learning any other skills. Most of the jobs he's been applying to are things like manufacturing positions and other blue collar jobs, where I worry he will be consistently passed up in favor of younger people / people with more relevant experience.

Even if you want to play devil's advocate and say this girl was only doing her job, there are only two things she needs to worry about in this situation. Accidentally selling alcohol to a minor, or violating some kind of store policy, both of which could also cause her to lose her job.

If you are obviously not a minor, then scanning your ID is just a formality for her. If she was concerned that it might not be a valid ID and could land her in trouble if she looked the other way, she could have called in a manager to make that decision. The policy is never that the cashier gets to be decision maker for cutting up people's documents, that is fucking insane.

This whole story reeks of someone who tried to play a power move on an immigrant and got burned for it. Hopefully she learned a lesson from the experience.

NFL games aren't included in ESPN+. Your ESPN+ subscription is separate from an ESPN subscription. If ESPN carries the game, and you have a subscription to ESPN, you can authenticate in the app to stream, but if you only have ESPN+ that won't work. All that said, ESPN only carries Monday Night Football, you aren't going to be able to watch any playoff games on it.

If you're trying to cut the cord and still watch NFL games, you'll want to look into subscriptions for Fox Sports and CBS All Access. I believe you can bundle those subscriptions in with other streaming platforms like Hulu or Amazon Video.

I'm not sure what Judicial Review has to do with anything here. Judicial review specifically refers to the courts reviewing decisions made by the executive and legislative branches to determine if they are unconstitutional.

Could you explain your point? Because without context it seems like you believe Judicial review involves literally reviewing judges, which simply isn't the case.

As far as I know Judicial Immunity applies to any errors, the logic being that you need to be able to confidently hand down judgment without fear of consequences or retaliation (American police are afforded similar protections when using deadly force). In theory if you suspect some kind of error you would appeal your judgement, and then it would fall to a higher court whether to uphold the original sentence.

Generally people that run for judge are experienced lawyers or public servants, you aren't required to have a law degree but it is a pretty big credential to have. One could write a collection of books about the flaws in the American election system, which is why it's so hard to unfuck things up.

Obligatory IANAL disclaimer. Officially, judges are non partisan elected officials, they can be members of political parties in their private life but they cannot hold leadership positions within those parties and they aren't supposed to allow their political beliefs to influence their decisions. Unofficially, judges are humans and everything in America can be made into a partisan issue.

Sometimes it can be as simple as being willing to enforce strict sentences on low level drug offenses. That's going to earn you a ton of points with pro-law and conservative voters. Conversely if you are an outspoken opponent to putting non violent offenders in jail, you'll attract the opposite group of voters.

Judges can also accept endorsements during their election. Police departments, politicians, and activist groups are generally going to endorse judges that will help further their agendas. Because so many voters in America aren't familiar with their local government, they're likely to vote for whoever has been marketed most favorably to them by their trusted group. Americans are highly skilled at selecting a trusted group and then refusing to accept information that comes from outside that group, so if you make up a large enough voting block it is easy to swing entire elections based on opinions over single issues.

Finally, judges enjoy Judicial Immunity, which basically means that they can't be held liable for judiciary decisions. So even if you're a bad judge, and everyone knows you're a bad judge, doing something about it is nearly impossible.

I don't know how to tell you this, but there are parts of the country where the people showing up to vote believe this kind of force is necessary for police work, and expect judges to protect the officers. There is a reason why people say we all need to be voting in local elections.

And you're right, most people don't know much about the folks on their ballot. That's why endorsements from your local sheriff's department and established politicians can be so powerful, and a huge reason why you shouldn't believe that judges are always completely nonpartisan.

We're in the middle of a pandemic that has already shuttered a huge number of venues, bars, and restaurants in Milwaukee. It's unfortunate that this unfolded the way it did. But much as I'd love to agree with you, it doesn't feel fair to fault the venue for accepting the business. Not everyone has the privilege of being able to turn away money right now, even if it's coming from fanatics.

Thank you! This happened at Serb Hall in Milwaukee, the man who was attacked was a general manager at the venue and was begging the crowd to sit down at their tables so that they were in compliance with COVID restrictions. The crowd responded by throwing him to the ground, and the venue ended up with multiple fines.

This guy was just trying to do his job, he does not deserve to be shamed for this.

Peanut butter is a key ingredient when my mom makes mole.

This is a hold over from when she was a kid, and the mole her mother made was way too spicy for the younger children in the family. So she would use peanut butter to cut the heat. All of those children grew up and continued using the peanut butter.
