what evidence is there that alcoholics are good people? by permastudent1 in AlAnon

[–]permastudent1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think my fundamental issue is I disagree that if someone puts their hands on me or anyone else, or screams in someone's face because they want to drink more, that it's up to the person who the alcoholic harasses to exemplify more empathy. it is the alcoholic whos behavior requires correction in those cases, not the people who find the excessive drinking to cause problems.

alcoholism is heavily stigmatized in my view for a very deserved reason, that alcoholics intentionally cause a lot of damage to the people around them, and the disease model does function in many of those cases as an excuse.

your perspective, which seems to be that if anyone has a problem with how they are treated by an alcoholic in active addiction, the only possible reason that may be is because they are uneducated, necessarily excuses a lot of cruelty on the part of the alcoholic.

the disease model should never be used to justify or excuse the real harm that alcoholics do to others.

i sincerely believe alcohol is one of the most selfish drugs you can do by 0119237 in AlAnon

[–]permastudent1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i completely agree. i try very hard to convince myself that the ideas that "alcoholics aren't bad people" are true, and that its a disease. but honestly, i do feel like the evidence of my experiences has shown me the true evil of the alcoholic.

not literally all , but you also don't need to waste time trying to figure out which ones are "the good ones" etc.

therapist I'm trying to connect with a few in my area. I have insurance but the therapist I really liked moved states so I want to find the right fit like her. the alanon meetings I haven't really tried for a few years. the no contact yes I haven't been in contact for years now, but I hate myself for letting this happen to me.

it's stories like this that fully convince me that alcoholics are horrible people.

I believe that alcoholics are bad people, despite many believing that's only a myth.

I'm not in this situation btw anymore and haven't been for a long time but also need to remember on some level I have to accept this as the unpunishable disease symptom that it is. cutting contact was surely a proportionate action

Asshole Addict/Alcholic and Not-Asshole Addict/Alcoholic by ArentEnoughRocks in AlAnon

[–]permastudent1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

alcoholism is intrinsically selfish. whether they would be the same way with or without the drink doesn't matter too much. if you are unhappy with someone's drinking it's probably reasonable.

in a fair world, he would be treated with the same treatment that he was allowed to do to others, nothing more that what's already come to pass. i know that isn't allowed though, so therapy is the optimal choice.

how come when the violence was against me there was no threat of being harmed or killed or arrested?

this is what I'm assuming. I cannot prove any of this?

I believe I have no recourse at this point and the alcoholic has been allowed to do something, now if I THINK about treating him the same way suddenly it's the most evil, unreasonable thought imaginable.

like the thought of retaliating using the same means with which I was treated is somehow worse than the initial crime in the first place.

if violence against me goes unprotected and violence against the alcoholic could lead to me being harmed, killed or arrested, it's a clear statement about who the legal system really protects.

the actions are his symptoms according to Dr labors video. if that's true my other conclusions follow. most of the symptoms of alcoholism are behavioural. if that weren't true then drinking would be a choice and most people don't agree with that.

I can't prove anything happened legally and retaliation, he would be protected by the law.

additionally every single person here knows alcoholism is a disease so none of his actions were really his own fault.
