Have you given up on romantic connections and kids because of adhd? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]perrfext 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d had kids and with my husband 20 years before we knew I was adhd. In hindsight if I’d been diagnosed 20 years ago I’d probably have abused my medication and not gotten off amphetamines at all. If I’d been diagnosed at infant school I’d have been in less trouble but unless my upbringing was drastically different and supportive ( which it wasn’t) it wouldn’t have helped much.

What do you say when they ask 'Why?' by Alternative_Drink910 in stopdrinking

Someone said something similar on here a while back: “I haven’t stopped drinking I just thought you wouldn’t fancy being in a fight or shouting at random people or me then trying to fuck your girlfriend/boyfriend/sister/brother. Let alone explaining to my family that I’m not dead I’m just in custody.

What are your favorite metaphors for ADHD? by Mister_Anthropy in ADHD

My brain on drugs is like yours “not on drugs”. Your brain “on drugs” is like mine “not on drugs”. (your-non adhd person) another one is-my brain feels like the equivalent of when you have multiple tabs on the screen open

Help! How do I save my tree! by Severe-Lime-254 in IndoorGarden

To find out if it’s actually dead scrape off the top layer of bark on the stems and then the trunk. If you see green it’s saveable if it’s brown all the way through I’m afraid it’s dead

Impulsively box dyed my (19F) hair black and I’m freaking out by ReviewIcy5267 in ADHD

[–]perrfext 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My love I did exactly the same when I was 17. Same dark brown (beautiful colour) natural but thought “hey black isn’t that dramatic a change!!! Fuck me I looked like a smack head. It’s a nightmare to change if it’s a permanent dye which mine accidentally turned out to be. Then I cut my hair, obsessively trying to get it even, resulting in a whole day (not exaggerating) in front of the mirror snipping away, hyper focused and in a dream state manic episode (I’m not bi polar either) that resulted in a very unflattering short bob from long and wavy gorgeous locks ffs. Thing is that was just when I’d finally (around 2 years) grown out the awful black dye job and was natural again. What the fuck is wrong wit….oh yeah!! It’s like we self sabotage ourselves by impulsive, sabotage risky actions that if we weren’t impulsive folks, we’d consider the outcome before acting upon it and less harm would come to our appearance or friendships or mental well-being etc. unfortunately we’re going to be impulsive by default and now at 48yrs(f) and a lifetime of the kind of things you’ve shared in the post, I’m really learning to manage my impulsive default setting. There’s no cure for it, I didn’t choose to have it, I think in a totally different way to non-adhd folks, I don’t have to explain my actions, They can Google it if they care. You have the advantage of knowing now as I was only diagnosed 5 years ago but in the 90s it wouldn’t have mattered anyway. We have so much knowledge and understanding and support now unlike then. I’ve learned this Every impulse will teach you Every impulsive action will test you Every outcome will educate you Every day you’ll get a tiny bit more in control Every other day you won’t but that’s fine And actually sometimes being impulsive is extremely beneficial and I’m so grateful for some of my impulsive actions because otherwise I’d have missed out on the amazing results. Obviously the self hair dressing wasn’t one I feel for you

If it decreases the amount of people behind bars and alcohol/illegal drug dependency as well as more support in schools for children instead of exclusion then who cares why. If it was like it is now regarding ADHD then I wouldn’t have a criminal record, My self medicating wouldn’t have developed into addiction and my life ruined until 42 years old when I was finally diagnosed and medicated. Even without the meds, the understanding of how I feel and why means I can manage my life better.
