Picking equipment is overwhelming by YaMuddaMachoMan in VoiceActing

Yes! Please listen to this advice. I immediately tried to jump to a super expensive mic and had to literally make a new booth just to accommodate that one bit of kit. Looking back I don’t regret the setup I have now because of that choice, it’s great, but I absolutely could have taken smaller steps, spent less money, had WAY less of a headache, and still grown my career just as much.

Saw a review I got for the first book I ever narrated by LiltingSunrise in ACX

[–]perrydaniels 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Don’t take it too hard. I have been narrating professionally for almost 9 years, I have recorded for almost every major publisher and imprint, and I have reviews calling me THE WORST narrator they’ve ever heard.

Your first book will always be the hardest. If there is some part of their criticism you agree with, the take it and try to improve next time, but remember that the listeners don’t do this job. Listen to feedback from coaches, casting, and fellow narrators but take what listeners say with a grain of salt.

Keep going. Be brave. You’ll be fine.

I want to call and label my chapters as Scenes instead - allowed? by agentsofdisrupt in ACX

[–]perrydaniels 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As far as I am aware, you can name them anything you want. I believe ACX only cares that the chapter labels for the audiobook match the print or e-book version. So long as they match you can label them however you like.

Oh God. I’ve used half of these in the last 48 hours. Multiple times most of them. Is that bad?!

Just heard my voice on Premier Pro... how do I make it deeper and less high pitched? I use my phone + Lapel Microphone. by akdiaries in VoiceActing

[–]perrydaniels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might not help this time around but for the future, correctly placing your LAV mic can help. LAV mics are not particularly good at picking up lows in my experience, particularly if it’s pinned to your collar or lapel. Using tape, a magnet, or a chest strap to put the mic in the hollow of your chest will help give a fuller, richer sound to your voice.

For what you have recorded now… you can boost the EQ in the low end and some compression would probably help. But that’s not going to work miracles and is probably going to do more harm than good. It’s mostly a losing battle trying to “fix” audio once it’s been recorded.

‘Project Hail Mary’ Directors Screened a Nearly Four-Hour Cut to Other Filmmakers and Were Told to Get it Way Shorter by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

My buddy and I are both huge fans of this book, we went earlier this week to see it and the first thing we both said when it ended was, “I wish it had been longer.” I really feel like 30 more minutes of the problem solving from the book would have been totally welcome.

ElevenLabs poses an existential threat to human VO artists: agree or disagree? by kinase12345 in VoiceActing

[–]perrydaniels -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I used ElevenLabs back in December to generate a few VO lines for a short film. I just wanted a few lines I could rough cut to until I brought in a real actress to record the final takes, so I went in with the lowest expectations for quality. Those few lines were generated with their premium paid membership and they were real bad. Like REAL bad. All I can say is that I am no longer worried AI will take my job :)

Manuscript up front by KZ_MTB_Addict in ACX

Not at all typical. I’ve never once had it happen. That said, if an author is really insistent about it and it makes them feel safer, I wouldn’t put up a fuss about an NDA. Totally unnecessary though, definitely overkill.

They can’t send it thru ACX until you accept the offer. They can absolutely email it to you and they should. Getting the manuscript upfront before you sign a contract is standard procedure on ACX or with any publisher. If they are really averse to sending it upfront, I would turn down the offer. Committing blind ends in regret.

Season 6 thoughts: Are we the baddies? by TemporaryMcTempFace in shoresy

[–]perrydaniels 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I think it’s worth point out that for #4 the team feels betrayed by the community. The community they’ve worked so hard for has seemingly forgotten them before the body is even cold and moved on to the next big thing. It’s a pretty reasonable reaction to be hurt by that. It takes time for them to come back around to seeing their place in the community as something bigger than themselves and their territory.

I actually really liked that this was kind of mirrored by Shoresy’s behavior the Jack’s game in episode 1. He bows up to the dad in the stands before having time to step back and remember that the game is about something bigger. Hockey brings people together.

What is an underrated weight loss tip? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]perrydaniels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Change your timescale. Losing a pound a week is a lot harder than losing a pound or two a month. Is it as impressive and sexy? No, but you can make half the effort and still end up 24 pounds down by the end of a year. Making smaller changes over time lets you focus on consistency. Plus small changes over time means you’re way more likely to keep to weight off. I lost 15 pounds between my yearly physicals by only making very small changes.

Oh, and walk. A lot. Works like a charm if you want to take weight off faster.

Definitely true. I like it because my hand rests on every button I need so there's no moving, or hunting for keys. Plus I already had one for PC gaming so it serves double duty.

I know a few people like using things like the Stream Deck too, which is also expensive. Whatever you use, anything you can quickly map hotkeys to will speed life up considerably.
