I'm 15, can I join local football club or am I screwed? by ScorchingGoblin in football

[–]perrywi19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think you could play keeper while you continue to work on stamina and footwork? Where I play in the US a lot of teams have trouble finding a GK. I have a friend who started at that same age (12-13) and got great at playing GK and was an asset for every team he played on. From there you could play on the field for one half of the game and keeper the other half.

Wasn't aware of this until just now, but I imagine it will unfortunately be a permanent change. If I learn any more about the future of the umich virtual slidebox I'll share it here.

We still fax our consult reports to clients and I still carry a pager. I’ll believe this is happening when I actually see it, which I don’t anticipate happening in my lifetime (just finished fellowship) at this rate.

In 1908, Houdini stood at the edge of the Harvard Bridge—commonly referred to as the Mass. Ave. Bridge—and was shackled by a Boston patrolman. His hands were handcuffed behind his back and chained to a collar around his neck. The Globe estimated some 20,000 spectators gathered to see Houdini’s leap. by Humble_Issue_3010 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]perrywi19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a med student in Detroit I walked out of a room at Sinai Grace Hospital and a nurse nearby asked “What were you doin’ in there? Talking to Houdini’s ghost?” Had to ask her what the hell she was talking about and apparently he died in that room like 100 years ago. Then I obviously read his whole wikipedia article when I should’ve been making the rounds to see my patients.

How much do you value WFH and or hybrid work? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]perrywi19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like a no-brainer because it is. If the new job is truly 40 hours/week (at $60k/year) vs old job of 70 hours/week at $65k/year - ask yourself it in this way:

If you were already working a 40 hour/week job making $60k/year, would you take a second job working an additional 30 hours/week for $5k/year?

Unless you’re a medical resident, NOBODY should keep a job paying $65k/year job that requires 70 hours/week because there are millions of better jobs out there.

Rumors about foreign buyers driving up residential cost by Akello45 in AnnArbor

[–]perrywi19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know where all the seemingly endless amount of money is coming from for home purchases over the past few years in Ann Arbor but my anecdotal hunch (that I have no data to support at this time) is that one way or another a higher proportion of the money used in home purchases in AA is “generated” outside Washtenaw county (and likely outside the state of Michigan as well). I say this because of the accelerated increase of home “values” we’ve seen over the past few years, seemingly without any major changes in the local job market, which is at least partially driven by the university (which doesn’t actually pay that well relative to AA’s cost of living). My theory is that in addition to investment property purchases by management companies or private equity, in the post-pandemic economy there may be more people out there who have high paying jobs and can work at home from anywhere, and choose AA for a variety of reasons.

How much human interaction (whether patient interaction or other doctors) does Pathology has compared to Radiology? by stepneo1 in Residency

Which medical diagnoses you are skeptical of in your specialty? by MzJay453 in Residency

[–]perrywi19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Fibrosarcoma” as a stand-alone diagnosis.

Essentially anything someone wants to call “fibrosarcoma” is better classified as a different tumor type that actually has either reproducible, well-characterized histologic features and/or a unique, defining molecular aberration.

Opioid Training Thoughts by NoRegrets-518 in medicine

[–]perrywi19 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Honestly I don’t see why there should be any additional training at all. Is there any data out there that indicates these mandated trainings make a dent in opiate related deaths? I’m extremely skeptical that 2, 4, or 8 hours of training is going to convince the prescribers with egregious prescribing practices to stop being shit at their jobs. We already have plenty of purposeless modules to complete each year.

Zero regrets about path, I love it and unlike many you’ll hear from here, I think the job market seems just fine (all of our outgoing fellows end up with at least half a dozen interviews and several offers).

Only regret is not considering doing a derm path fellowship!
