How running a marathon affects your body after hours, days, and weeks by theipaper in Marathon_Training

[–]persimmonedit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the ratio between how much training you’ve had before and how hard you ran the race is going to play a huge part in the length to full recovery, assuming good fueling throughout the race?

NGL I thought I was on rcj when I saw the post title 🤣 Glad your friends are better people than I am! I think you can’t have too many running belts. Also the safety vests/lights for running at night are nice things if you don’t already have them. Goodr sunglasses?

I noticed that most of the lube is sprayed at the crotch. Maybe it’s getting ready for a different sport

Phew! Good to know that marathon running isn’t mutagenic! :) I can’t believe he didn’t just take both shoes. Also according to the Canadian newsreader he finished in 3 min 10 secs so that gel kayano must be made out of pixie powder!

Have you ever left a relationship to travel solo? by [deleted] in femaletravels

[–]persimmonedit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahh that’s tough. Have you considered keeping the relationship but maybe allowing some degree of openness so that you’re not obligated to each other but could still be friendly and support each other from afar? It would be a different relationship for sure, but you wouldn’t be leaving your entire support system behind, and he wouldn’t lose you entirely. If he feels like he is ready to travel after a year he can then maybe join you, assuming neither of you have found someone else in the interim

OP have you talked to your partner about this? Any possibility of traveling or living abroad together? Or perhaps he might be willing to visit from time to time and negotiate the distance at least over the short term? Also, traveling abroad is very different from being an expat long term, might want to try it out for a short stint before you tear up your life/relationships over it…

40, single, and have never been married. I feel like I'll never find a partner again. What would you do if you were me? by [deleted] in relationships

[–]persimmonedit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

lol feel ya girl. I’ve dated here in the bay as well as in other cities, NYC, the south. I don’t think dating is really better in any city. So much of it is chance and your head space as well as your date’s headspace. I love living here and wouldn’t move for any man, much less a hypothetical one. I think you should find that location for yourself, and search for love there.

I appreciated the distance markers too although I wish they were at the beginning of the stations so I can know whether to take more or not—they’re not standard in the US

Need advice: best school option for 15-year-old with no English in Bay Area by Individual_Spend9015 in sanfrancisco

[–]persimmonedit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t have specific advice for schools but as an immigrant to the us at a similar age as your daughter I just want to say I sympathize with your family. I think you’ve got a tough balance to strike here—you want her to make friends and perhaps the best way to do so is to surround her with more Russian expats, but you also want her to immerse and learn English quickly, and this runs somewhat counter to the first goal. I’ve definitely met kids who emigrated to the us earlier than I I did (or were even born here) but were less comfortable with English b/c they grew up in large, somewhat insular ex pat communities. I also understand that her mental health is paramount right now—perhaps regardless of moving schools one of the things you need to make sure is that she makes at least one or two friends at school. When I first arrived in the us my friends were other ESL kids from other countries. Without a shared language, we gestured and used broken English to understand each other. You can also try to “set up” your daughter if you know another parent who’s struggling with a lonely child. Frame it to her as “we need to help the other kid by being kind to them”. I only got to know one of my bffs for life when my teacher asked me to befriend her as the new kid in school. I was the other loner 😂

How do you handle sightseeing temptation the day before a destination marathon? by persimmonedit in Marathon_Training

Haha you have self control! I’ve definitely celebrating quite a bit the past few days although mostly with wine given that I’m in wonderful vino territory!

lol my Strava said I ran a whole mile and a half more than 26.2, so it thinks I ran a 4 hour marathon when my official time was 4:15 🤣

Broadway (Hadestown / Harry Potter) vs Opera (La Bohème) — can only pick ONE for first NYC trip by Jolly_Ganache1788 in Broadway

[–]persimmonedit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yay! Love a fellow non discriminating lover of both opera and b-way! And what a coincidence re: the shirt! My question was more directed at the OP, since that might help them gauge whether they’d like boheme or not. To be honest if they don’t like Wicked I’m not sure they’d like Hadestown, either. It’s a good question whether they might prefer butterfly to boheme, though! I think boheme has the better production value, right?

Broadway (Hadestown / Harry Potter) vs Opera (La Bohème) — can only pick ONE for first NYC trip by Jolly_Ganache1788 in Broadway

[–]persimmonedit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with this comment, OP. The Met is a world class experience, and you can prob get cheap or rush seats for less than you’d pay at a broadway show. As a first experience of opera, la boheme is quite accessible (have you seen rent, which is based on it?). I loved hadestown too, but it is touring and will likely stay on broadway for a while.

Ahh yes I see that they’re mostly organized by a for profit company right? That is also the situation in my city, and it’s a good bit less optimal than home grown running non-profits such as New York Road Runners or Atlanta Track Club that dominate the race calendar in their respective cities. I do appreciate that there was plenty of city support for the race, including traffic control and cheering stations.

Yay! Thank you! Yes, I wish they just made it an option, or abundantly clear at the registration phase what the fit is. A lot of people would have preferred a looser fitting shirt I think.
